As a parent of a Steppingstone student, I watch other student's come into the school and are transformed. Many have been traumatized in public school and within a few weeks are happy and productive students. I have witnessed other parents go from tears to smiles when they drop their child off to school at Steppingstone. It is truly a strong academic learning environment for the gifted. The reason the student body is small is because they have never comprised their standards for numbers or tuition as all of the gifted schools have done. They truly recognize a gifted student and educate them in an individualized setting like no other school in the state. They may not have all of the glitz and glamour as some of the larger schools, but the academic rigor is incomparable.

When do you decide that your child needs to have 'great education' and be challenged: when they are in elementary or middle or high school, or you do not worry about it until they (try to) get to the college? Steppingstone is small community on its own. Since our first child enrolled when he was 1st grade, we never looked back. Steppingstone provided encouraging, safe and stable environment for kids. The teachers and the school principal work with parents to help kids grow to be responsible, and confident

Enrolling our children here has transformed our lives individually and as a family by taking the boredom and struggle away and deeply engaging the kids as individuals. Stepping Stone is their extended 'family.' Every aspect of curriculum and instruction has been thoughtfully designed for quick learners, asynchronous or otherwise, addressing perfectionism and anxiety common in gifted kids. We are grateful that math here is not fuzzy- kids study a unit until they master it and only then move on. (Most Detroit-area private schools, including those for gifted, use Chicago/Everyday Math.) Teachers are firm AND fun. Learning is hands-on and experiential. They're also learning computer programming, how to design, conduct and interpret high level scientific research, as well as the challenging major world lamguages - Hindi, Chinese and Japanese. The kids are easily doing work a couple years advanced of what is being taught in most public and private schools. As parents we now feel confident our kids are learning what they need to be resourceful, happy and productive future leaders. Headmistress Kiyo Morse is a quiet educational pioneer. We love the school and faculty.

They've taken the time to get my child motivated and successful. He has access to more subjects in more depth than my other two in public school.

My kids love going to school, and miss it in the summer. The teachers work with the students to keep them challenged in every subject so that they don't get bored.

Steppingstone School The school is working diligently to raise funds for a STEM Robotics lab for all of the students to take part in. Steppingstone School is a school for uniquely gifted children . There is no other school in Michigan that provides the individualized learning that his school does. It is a blessing for parents of gifted children. This lab will offer additional learning opportunities for all students. The funding would be used to complete a lab and purchase the necessary materials.

Steppingstone has been a wonderful school for my son. He was having challenges conforming to the expectations for the large group teaching approach used in public schools. Steppingstone provides the right amount of challenge and individual attention that my son requires as a gifted child. They teach all of the students personal responsibility for their own actions. All of the standard subjects are covered in addition to advance science, computer programming and foreign languages for all ages.

Steppingstone School has made our child love school. (For a tween that is hard to do!) At this school, students must complete all their work and achieve mastery of a subject. That means even if it is late, an assignment must be done which teaches children responsibility. I have also noticed that the teachers are extremely talented in relating to the students which helps the children achieve their potential and feel safe. Parents are extremely involved in the school and there is a great community. I have never encountered a school like this but I am sure glad I did.

Steppingstone School has challenged our son in the classroom while providing a supportive and safe environment. He is learning problem solving and critical thinking skills at a young age, which will definitely benefit him throughout his life. Students are friendly and supportive of each other.

Steppingstone school is the only school I know that accepts gifted learners who are obviously struggling. My son entered Steppingstone in 6th grade. He experienced a great deal of struggle until the school pointed out that he skipped little words while reading and suggested that he could have an eye convergence issue. A test confirmed that while he had 20/20 vision he had eye convergence insufficiency causing him to strain so much at any close up work that it caused symptoms similar to ADD. The school and I have been working together and I am happy to report that my son is doing well in school! Something any parent wants to hear! The school will adjust your child's learning plan. The only complaint I have is that the learning is not fully individualized. Your child will be placed in a specific grade for all major subjects (these could be different grades for different subjects). Their pace is in part dependent on the classes progress.

Steppingstone School is a school with a strong academic focus. My child had tried both public and private schools before we arrived at this great institution. My child is finally challenged and getting a wonderful education. Every day my child arrives and leaves each school day happy because each day he is actually learning something new. He especially enjoys the critical thinking class where they reinforce and teach logical thinking. This school reflects our values in that each student is held responsible to get their homework done and also correct any mistakes they've made in their work so that the child is truly learning the material and not just memorizing what they've read. If your child is bored in school and isn't learning anything new don't let them languish there to the point where they are losing their enthusiasm for learning. Do you child a favor and send them to a place that specializes in expanding their minds, building their confidence and accelerating their capabilities.

Steppingstone School not only offers a top notch education in math, science, literature and social studies, they also teach art, music, computer and foreign languages. So many schools have abandoned their art and music programs and it's wonderful to have our son at a school that still thinks these are important subjects for a well-rounded education. Bravo, Steppingstone!!

Steppingstone is the best thing that happened to our family's education. All three of mine enjoy learning, not afraid to ask difficult questions, and expect themselves to do their best. All that without receiving a single grade! The amazing philosophy of steppingstone involves individual approach ,teaching children to learn and be engaged in their education.

Five stars to a great little school with a big heart. The school community (parents, teachers, administrators and office help) is amazing. Individualized curriculum with emphasis on a child's interests make the school experience enjoyable.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
