Red Hill has been great for our son. He is currently 5 yo and has been there for 2.5 years. The teachers take a real interest in him and are very accessible. The low student:teacher ratio helps them spend quality time with all the kids. Our son has been reading and writing for several months. He also is able to do 3 digit addition and simple subtraction. Every day he surprises me with something else he knows. The field trips are great and give a chance for the parents to get to know each other. Red Hill feels like family. I'm glad we made the right choice in sending our son there.

Red Hill Montessori is a great school! My son has attended the Kindergarten class for the last 7 months and is already doing 3 digit addition with carrying and reads books. When we visit the library now, he often pulls out one of the early reader books and starts reading to his little sisters. Ms Salma and Ms Megan are truly amazing with the kids. It is obvious that they love their profession and accept the children as they are with all their strengths and challenges. The classroom discipline is exceptional, creating a good learning environment. The children are allowed to soar and depending on each one's ability, the sky is the limit. While there is a strong emphasis on reading, writing and math, the curriculum is well balanced and includes arts, sports, science, nutrition, communication skills and fun packed field trips. Ms Leila, the director, is always available for questions and truly cares about the school and children. We are eager to see the progress of our 3 year old who recently started at Red Hill.

I have more than one child at Red Hill. The excellent care & education begins in the infant room. My children were loved and nurtured at RH starting at a very young age. The infant room teachers went above & beyond to care for my children AND they were also exposed to Spanish, Dance, Music, Art, etc. They have grown exponentially with each classroom they have entered. The strong academic foundation & the curriculum used in the Pre-school at RH is AMAZING! Just take a look at the work these kids are doing at their age! The individualized instruction is impossible to surpass. My oldest is now in the Elementary school at RH & she is thriving. The elementary teachers continue to teach each child on an individual basis. There are no rules on how far a student can go...the sky is the limit for our kids. There is no school like RH in this area. At 1/3 the cost of 'other' private schools in the area the decision has been easy for us. I look forward to a fun-filled summer of sports, ice cream socials, swimming, & fun on the school's splash pad. Thank you, Miss Leila, for your dedication & passion for Red Hill. Your commitment to excellence has made all the difference for my kids.

Here are the facts. First of all, the owner is very unpredictable. She will praise you and your child one day and is very liable to give you unsolicited, unprofessional, and down right rude words of "advice" during the next meeting. She speaks to parents (and staff) as though they were ignorant children with no sense. Some of the staff members are genuine with the children and teachings while the others are under the owners thumb, afraid to speak up at all in fear of losing their job. Red Hill does not incorporate Common Core in their curriculum which is the the curriculum used by most schools across the nation. Red Hill students (my own and several others that I have spoken with) are appx 1/2 grade level above in 1 or two subjects at their new schools, not "far ahead" as we were made to believe. The staff is constantly changing! My child wanted to know why "all the nice teachers keep leaving us". My childs self-esteem and grades definitely suffered for it. If parents question or challenge the owner with regards to their precious children they are scolded and told to take their children else where and that she doesnt need their money that bad!! Unbelievable!

Red Hill has been part of our family since 2009! The owner/director is very passionate and hands on with all the students. She has set high standards for the school academically and works hard to maintain such standards, thus the reason for the turnover (as mentioned in previous reviews). The school focuses its mornings on academics and afternoons on extra curricular activites...dance, art, Spanish, gym, music and the new splash pad! The office manager (Ms Christina) and the teachers are always professional and nurturing! Red Hill, while not a religious school, is very modest. The classrooms are well disciplined, and very productive! My 5 year old is reading at a level 4, working on 3 digit addition and single digit subtraction! My 3 year old son is writing his name, numbers, most of the alphabet and reading appx 20 sight words!! My 7 year old daughter is breezing through 3rd grade math, her language and writing abilities are impressive! We have recently moved but will always appreciate Red Hill for 5 wonderful years of learning, genuine friendships and lasting memories!!!

Red Hill Montessori ROCKS!!! The first thing I love about Red Hill is the safety and love that is provided to my child. The teachers are genuine and Ms. Layla the Principal is AWESOME!!! Even the parents and other children are great. All the children get along, which is very important to me besides a great education. Red Hill is very family oriented. Ms. Layla is not just the Principal but has hands on with all the children. My daughter started at age 4 and is now 5; she reads like a pro and enjoys reading. She is doing three-row addition and subtraction. The art, history and science curriculum is great!!! She loves science and history. I hate to say it but I often compare her to my friend s children in the same age bracket or older and she is so much more advanced. My niece started Red Hill at 2 and is reading and is able to hold full conversations. My niece speech and understanding is impeccable!!! My daughter is now in first grade and I can t wait to see her progress.

My child just turned 4...she is reading ACTUAL books and doing 3- digit addition. AMAZING! The key to their success is the foundation they create and the individualized instruction. I cannot wait to see how far she will go in their elementary school!!! Some people look for fancy schools that just look pretty, but that is it. Red Hill is the real deal. Worth every penny! I also LOVE their new splash pad!

We had both of our children at Red Hill, and when we moved to a different City, we enrolled the girls in a new school that was right around the corner. It became obvious very quickly that the new school was of a much lower standard - yet it too was a montessori. We returned to Red Hills and despite the two hours we spend every day driving to and fro school, we continually see the benefits. This is THE school for your children to attend. I cannot recommend Red Hill Montessori enough.

My daughter attended Red Hill Montessori for the last 5 years, preschool - 3rd grade. My child was very active and a challenge to teach, but the owner, Leila Rotberg-Charlesworth and her teaching staff took the necessary time to ensure a quality learning experience. I shutter to think where she'd be today if she had not attended Red Hill. But now she is a very happy, delightful child who lists reading, history and science among her favorite subjects. Red Hill is more than a typical Montessori as they have a very strong academic foundation, most students are 2-years ahead of public school standards, but they also get a very solid footing in music and performance. They give 2 major performances a year with each child playing a role on stage. As a result, my daughter is very comfortable and confident at the mic. I'm thrilled my daughter had such a strong start in her academic career! I would send her there all over again in a heart-beat!

My son attends Red Hill Montessori year round since 3rd grade. He's currently in 4th grade. I really like the education he is getting from Red Hill. The teachers are great and the principal is passionate about education. His English has improved a lot ever since he attended Red Hill. The small mixed grade class room foster tailor made learning opportunities for my son. He is good at math but his English level is only average, so I was glad that he was given the needed challenge in his English. I like the small class size and the low teacher-student ratio too which is something I cannot get from public school these days. My son enjoyed the music, gym, dancing, Spanish, cooking classes that the school offer. The school is open year round even in the summer. Summer program has 1/2 day learning and 1/2 day activities. I prefer this over the all play summer camps which is hard for kids to go back to school in Sept. I would highly recommend this school to anyone.

One year ago, I enrolled my son, who at the time was 2, in Red Hill Montessori. A year later, he reads fluently. A few weeks ago, he selected one of Dr. Seuss's book and read it cover-to-cover. He is also performing single digit addition, and learning to speak Spanish. This is amazing for a child who is 3 yrs. old. I couldn't be more happier with Ms. Leila and her staff especially Ms. Shawnee, Ms. Lori, Ms. Ghada and Ms. Ryan. Others have reported Ms. Leila as rude and impersonal. I would replace those descriptions with passionate, academically focused, zero tolerance for laziness and excuses coupled with a strong love for children. I love this school and would highly recommend it to others.

I am currently a teacher at Red Hill Montessori and my experience has been rewarding and extremely wonderful. At Red Hill Montessori we strive for excellence. We nurture, guide and educate the children academically, emotionally, and socially. We focus on the development of the whole child, not only providing personalized attention and student centered lessons, but also creating a rich and broad variety of experiences beyond our walls through art classes, stage performances, engaging field trips, and activities throughout Metro Detroit . Our Director, Ms. Leila has dedicated her life imparting Montessori education of the highest quality. The Director and the teachers take great initiative and put a lot of hard work into molding each child and bringing them up to a level that is way above other regular Montessori and public schools . The discipline of the school is commendable. It has been a pleasure working here.

I currently work at Red Hill Montessori part time and I couldn t be happier with my employment. It is a joy to work with all the staff and students. The staff are very helpful to each other and there is a great deal of teamwork on a daily basis. Every staff member has the common goal of maximizing each child s education and experience here at Red Hill Montessori. I have also had the pleasure of working directly with Ms. Leila. She has a very strong personality and an extreme passion for the students and for her school. It is this passion that has taught me a great deal about working with children. Ms. Leila expects the best and will not settle for less. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity of working with her and at Red Hill Montessori. Each time that I am at the school, I can see the staff working together and encouraging each student to do their best. The environment at Red Hill is very warm and welcoming. I always look forward to coming in to work.

Red Hill Montessori has been serving the Farmington Hills community for over 21 years our mission is to work hand in hand with our outstanding, supporting parents. I am a very upfront person and always say what I find to be the truth and not what people want to hear. Many times this is taken as rudeness. The year after our new building expansion, we began our infant/toddler rooms, this expansion opened opportunities for new staff which we hired in great numbers and in a speedy manner. The other false accusation that we are not Montessori could not be further from the truth. All of our classrooms are Montessori prepared environments, and have one or more Montessori certified teachers, in addition to me. We also have an independent Montessori Consultant that works alongside the teachers. Lastly, I would like to address the comment regarding the fact that after a negative comment is posted it is followed by 3 or 4 positive ones. This is perfectly understandable as we have a close and supportive community of parents that are always ready and eager to defend and support the school anytime an unfair comment is posted. Leila Charlesworth, Principal Red Hill Montessori Academy

We have two children 11 and 6 years. Both were students of RedHill Montessori. 11-year old was with this school for 3 years and 6-year old was there for 4+ years. We live in Novi with about 15 miles away from this school. Both of our children are now in Northville public schools. Choosing this school for our children was one of the greatest gifts given to them. This school has provided best all-round curriculum that our kids can absorb. Both have received structured and well-organized academics and extra-curricular activities including Music, PE and field-trips. As parents, we have encouraged our kids to follow teachers' directions and complete Homework. That's all we did for our kids during their stay at RedHill (formerly Farmington Hills Montessori School). Both of our kids are doing great in Northville public schools with advanced-curriculum. Many thanks to Ms. Leila, Mr. David and others.

All I can say is WoW! Red Hill Montessori is an excellent school. My son has attended Red Hills for 3 years and I must say I am completely pleased with the education he is receiving. The teachers are very dedicated and nurturing to the students. They gently encourage all of the students to do their very best. That is why the students excel academically. In addition to all the successfully teaching going on at Red Hills, it possesses a family atmosphere that will give any parent comfort that their child will be cared for. Last, I must mention that the director, Leila Charleworth has a vested interest in the academic and emotional growth of all of the students. She personally listens to every student read and calls the parents just to see how the school year is going. Red Hill is a wonderful place for a child to be educated.

My son is now 4 and we enrolled him at Red Hill when he was 18 months old. He is now reading cover-to-cover books, writing legibly, doing double digit additions and much more! His teachers from Prep Jr, Prep Sr and now at Pre-K are extremely loving, patient, attentive and supportive. To them, knowledge has no limits and they continue to challenge each kid to maximize their potentials. Ms. Leila is a wonderful 'second' mother to all of the students. She knows every student by name. She takes it to heart when kids are lagging among their peers and work with them individually. She is a disciplinarian, very upfront and honest-- which we love. She is not afraid to tell us when she has concerns about how we used to 'baby' our child. Some parents might take her honesty as a criticism but we love her for it.

Red Hill Montessori is a great school academically but there is too much behind the scenes drama. The directors behavior and attitude are highly disrespectful. She does not appreciate the Teachers who devote themselves whole heartedly to provide a nurturing and academically advanced classroom. I would not recommend parents to this school. Don't get me wrong, you won't find better teachers but the environment here is filled with negativity and disrespect. Children do not need to be a part of that in any respect.

The school is not well managed and the principal is not responsive to parents' needs. There are much better run schools in the area, which are better for the child's development and education. Also, the reviews here do not seem to be correct. Many of the positive reviews here are posted on the same date(like Oct 23, July 16, 2008) and I am not sure if they reflect the true state of the school.

I have been very impressed with Red Hill Montessori as a recently hired employee. I have been teaching for seven years and have never experienced love, dedication/devotion, patience, and enthusiam in such a school community. The teachers are well respected by the principal and most importantly their concerns are taken into high consideration. The principal have made herself/office avaible to me. I have been very impressed with the students level of intelligence. We have 4 year old students reading at a first and second grade levels which is rare. The ratio in the class room is 8 to 1, which is awesome.

Red Hill Montessori is a wonderful school! My son will be a first grader this fall and already he is reading chapter books. We see children at the different libraries that are in the Birmingham, Bloomfeild Hills and Farmington Hills school districts that are not at his level of reading. His math skills are also above average and even transend into his everyday life. Due to the tremendous academic advancement his thinking is very sharp!

Red Hill Montessori is a great school of academic excellence. It provides all the care and supervision needed for your child s academic growth as well as social development. Red Hill has a highly qualified and experienced staff. The director Ms. Leila is educated, experienced and above all a very dedicated leader. She cares for each of her students individually and monitors their progress. She has strict rules for code of conduct, cleanliness and the over all environment of the school. My experience at Red Hill Montessori has been enriching, rewarding, and pleasurable. The success of our school can be attributed to the hard work, commitment, and determination of the entire administration and staff. The school's emphasis on academics, discipline, and independence can be illustrated by the success of the students and the commitment from administration, staff and parents. Furthermore, Red Hill Montessori promotes health and fitness through all types of extracurricular activities, and by implementing a hearty and healthy lunch menu for the students. Red Hill Montessori will prepare each student for academic success for years to come.

If you are a parent who is searching for the #1 pre-school in Oakland County to bring out your child's full potential, look no further than Red Hill Montessori (formerly known as Montessori Center of Farmington Hills.) As a mother who scoured the earth before enrolling my son, I have first-hand knowledge of how this award-winning school weaves its academic, emotional and intellectual magic on children, leaving parents and grandparents astonished at what their children are capable of at such a young age. How do I know this to be true? My four year-old son, Michael, has attended the school for the past two years. At age three, Michael was already an avid reader. After proving his newly-acquired skills for his grandparents last year, they couldn't believe their eyes - or ears! By the age of four, Michael now delights in adding 19+5 or 100+6 in his head, breezing through math

Red Hill Montessori is a school where any child will fit in. Simply because it prepares children for life with an organized approach of academic success, development of independence, self-discipline and a life long love of learning. We encourage purposeful interaction between students and the classrooms. Our children are typically eager to learn, enjoy challenges, work well with peers and are comfortable with independence. Our principal always works with the student s best interest in mind, allowing and providing guidance through the prepared environment, to ensure that each student is working to the very best of his/her ability. A typical classroom day includes academic work in the morning, conversation, outdoor activities, music and movement. Parent s are always welcome to get involved, because we believe that communication between school and home will help to the reach the hopes, goals and expectations for the students success.

The teachers at Red Hill Montessori are very dedicated and supportive. We have a parent s advisory board where the communication is always open. I work at the Red Hill Montessori school and my children attend here as well. I feel like this is the best decision that I have made. I have worked in the Montessori field for over ten years, and find Red Hill Montessori to be among the best. Leadership, as well as curriculum, is important to me; therefore, upon returning to Michigan after being in California for two years. I immediately inquired about continuing my teaching career at Red Hill Montessori. As a leader, Ms. Leila has always demonstrated a caring attitude. She went out of her way to make sure my own children were able to attend. I am very pleased with quality of teachers and extra curricular activities. I admire how involved Ms. Leila is in getting parents involved. Her passion is definitely contagious.

My child attended this school for a little over a year and it was a big dissapointment. In the beginning everything looks great but it's really not the case. The teachers are great, but the director is always controling what goes on in the classrooms. She is very unprofessional and at times very rude. There are no curriculums, even though they will show you one, class plans will change on the spot as the principal sees neccesary. They go to the gym in a little school bus that I though it was dangerous. Look around, you will find a better school.

My own grandson who goes to West Bloomfield Public School is for back in math level even with the same grade level. Every time when I have questions or concerns about music program which I am responsible of I find unconditional support from the principal Ms. Leila. I sought admission at Red Hill Montessori for our 4 year old in 2003. I was extremely impressed with the principal Leila Charlesworth, because she could give me an insight about my daughter's handwriting difficulty a problem that I was trying to solve for a long time. At that time I felt this is the right place for us. The principal is simply a very wonderful person to interact. Not only that she wins the heart of the students by knowing each child personally but she also treats like her own children.Regarding the extracurricular activites, they are simply superb/ They have excellent gym class twice a week. They have dance and spanish too. That is why we decided to bring both my children to this school, just because my kids will be trained up for their future while being nurtured with love and care, which they might miss from working moms.

After extensive research on schools for my son, I found this school to be the best. The Principal is highly qualified and committed on getting the best teachers, materials and programs for the children. The school follows in an excellent manner, Maria Montessori's method and complements it with the Glenn Doman's method. The programs are constantly reviewed and updated in order to bring the best out of the children. Beside, both the Principal and the staff are very open and enjoy working with parents. There is also a Parent's Board that works hand in hand with the school and other parents. I highly recommend this school.

My son has attended this school from the age of 18 months, he is now almost 5 yrs old. Inspite of what might have been seen as high turnover at one time never affected the progress that my child made and he continues to learn by leaps and bounds. The directress has always had an open door whenever I felt the need to communicate. I have her full committment to my child's education and she and the rest of her staff have my full support for the same.

My child has attended the Montessori Center of Farmington Hills for about a year now. I am very happy with the outcome. The director of the school is very open and always willing to speak with me if there is ever a concern. As teachers approach yearly transitions (vacation, summer school etc), the change is never easy for parents or students. The school is very diverse, the teachers have many years of experience and the Montessori mythology of teaching is very apparent in my child's classroom. The advancement is tremendous.

My son has been attending this school for about 9 months and we are very pleased with his progress, as well as the extracurricular activities that are offered. He loves going to school and I find the teachers and support staff very approachable and competent.

The 'directoress' is absolutely unprofessional and seems not to encourage parent involvement. High staff turnover.

My child just left this school the principal is very unprofessional and lacks leadership skills. Teachers are being replaced all the time. We did not want to leave but we had no choice.

My daughter has gone to this Montessori for the past two years. Some of the leadership issues seem to have been resolved since 2004. I am very pleased with the teachers and the results, both socially and academically. The teachers have very high expectations of the students, and the students seem to enjoy the challenge. My daughter (age 6) is at least 2 grade levels ahead in both math and reading, and tells me that her classmates are doing the same work. My daughter also continues to be enthusiastic about learning.

I feel that the director is unresponsive and often unavailable to parents. I also do not feel that she adequately addresses parental issues when they arise.

Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
