I love this school. I found this school looking for a preschool, and I am very happy. Confrences are not open with other parent as said in other reviews. It is a very friendly atmosphere and my son is excelling very quickly. I am very impressed with all the teachers and paraprofessionals. When I went to school, there was only one teacher. Michigan did something right with the No Child Left Behind Act. They even have parapros that work one on one with the children that need more help.

This schools sucks...administration is horrible. Teachers are not friendly nor do they know how to teach kids with disabilities correctly. There isn't proper materials for the students and the laptop program is not what it is cracked up to be. I caught my daughter using her for socializing while she was in school.

Summit Academy is such a refreshing change!!!I enrolled my kids here this year and so far, I am SO impressed. The teachers have been phenomenal with getting back to me. I prefer to use email, and I get a response back within a day or the same day. I also had a question for the principal, and she called me back within the hour. This is refreshing. At their old school, I never got return calls or emails unless I called to complain. From what I can tell, this school will be my kids school until they graduate.

We really like this school. My son is extremely bright, so I was worried that he would not be challenged. But when my husband and I found out about what was happening in the 3rd and 4th grade, we were so excited to give it a try. The teachers are teaching him at the level he needs and he's finally not bored! He is really good at math, and the teachers recognized this from the day we enrolled and he was placed in the highest level. I am telling all of my friends to enroll their kids...especially if you have a kiddo that is advanced.

I LOVE this school! My son and daughter have gone here for 2 years. I would recommend Summit to anyone. Any time I have ever had a question or a concern, it was handled quickly. The principal is firm and fair, something I did not find at our old district. The teachers are great and work with my kids at their level. Again...GREAT school. My kids are happy and that's important in my book.

Summit Academy is a great place to send your kids. They have a great group of teachers that have worked there a long time. That says something to me. My son has attended Summit for 3 years and had the same teacher for all 3 years. She really knows my kid! The ladies in the office are also so helpful and sweet. I give them a ton of credit.

We transferred our son to Summit Academy Flat Rock. He was in the 6th grade. What a HUGE mistake! We were told that he would get tutoring. The extent of his tutoring was 15 students to 1 teacher doing homework for other classes. No actual help. This was the worst decision I have ever made. He was picked on and nothing was done after several discussions personally with the principal and e-mails. The teachers do not respond to e-mails which is the preferred way to communicate. Their idea of parent teacher conferences is every parent show up at the same time. All the teachers are in a circle and first come first serve. You are in an open area where everyone can hear you discuss personal information about your child. If you are contemplating sending your child to this school I highly recommend you reconsider. This school will damage your child not help them.

I went here K-2 and It was HORRIBLE. They never taught/helped me how to read. i could BARELY read in the 3rd grade. And when I was in 2nd grade, for the math, we were only learning 1+10 ; 5+9 ; 7-3 ; then I switched schools in third grade and they were learning division and multiplication. Summit put me WAY behind in school. By the time I was in third grade (when I switched schools) I was learning at a first grade level. This school is good for people with special education. But other than that, its a horrible school. They put me soooo behind. And its also really boring and many teachers are really mean.

If you have a child w/ any type of special need, in my opinion Summit is prepared to handle them. My child has Asperger's Syndrome and our current school district said there was nothing they could do to help us. In there word, "We were better off enrolling our child with Summit." In our situation the school has offered and provided the tools for success. My child has excelled academically, but struggles w/ the social aspect. Everyday is a social challenge and kids can be cruel. That will happen anywhere. The school handles any problem that occurs. With our child it has been a wonderful, sometimes challenging experience. We definitely love the school.

I have 3 children enrolled at summit I am not satifed with the programs set in place to assist children that need help, the teachers a good but they cant seem to keep the good ones long the teachers aide are lazy and they are understaffed in that area. This is the 2nd new principal in the last 2 years she is not very personable and doesnt work well with students

As a parent of one recent graduate and a high school senior, I can say that Summit Academy has a highly dedicated staff, relevant curriculum and leans heavily toward technology. There is no better place for a child to learn.

It's ok,but they give a load of homework. The paraprofessional there are annoying. She has to stay by me when I don't even need her.The dress code is ridiculous too, they should at least allow me to wear my skull socks!

We enrolled our daughter mid-way through the school year, when she was in 4th grade. She was enrolled at Barnes in Flat Rock. The district we live in was such a nightmare! Summit was a welcomed breath of fresh air! My daughter LOVES to go to school now. The teachers and staff at Summit are friendly, unlike the stuff at Barnes that give the cold shoulder as a standard. I have compared her homework to others in the same grade at Barnes, and they are learning the same things. Summit, unlike Barnes, still teaches math "old-school" instead of some hodge-podge new way that was "suppose" to make it easier. We can't wait for school to start!

My child went to this school from kindergarten until halfway through fifth grade. We decided to move them to our district after we moved and when I realized how low Summit's test scores were. My daughter's 4th grade class was rated a 1 according to the scores on this site. It has been two years since we moved and my daughter is still struggling in all subjects when she was on the honor roll at Summit.

This is the best school ever! It is not only a set of teachers, children, staff, and parents, but a Family. Everyone knows each other, the teachers know all the kids, not just the ones in their grades, it is a wonderful environment. It is all about working together for the kids. Helping them acheive their goals, and striving for the best!

I am seeing so many great reviews and I completely agree. I witnessed a parent of a child in my daughters class complaining about a teacher that thought she was blaming her son for his poor grades and that he was a 'GOOD' kid. I though odd this teacher has been awesome for my kid. I know other mothers that had no problems with the same teacher. I also saw a week latter at a function the same 'GOOD BOY' curse a little boy out intimidate him into a corner and punch him several times. It's sad cause this mother had allready admited her kid had problems in other schools. Come on really it's the teacher? Uh no. It's the kid. This is the school if you want to be a hands on parent. Go to the meetings, feild trips it is family oriented and will step up helping struggling students.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
