Powers Catholic is the best school in Genesee county. My daughter is now in her senior year. When my family suffered a family emergency I knew that my daughter would be looked after and knew that this school is family. Everyone from the staff to the student support her. My daughter is thriving and is growing up to be a remarkable young women. I know that she is prepared for college and is very proud to be at Powers.
My spouse and I are both products of public education and we live in a great school district. That being said, I have been very impressed with the quality of education my child has been receiving. My student is challenged everyday both academically and spiritually. I particularly LOVE that the student body is both socially and ethnically diverse. While no school is perfect, I have met very few students both past and present, who did not enjoy their time at Powers. With their new campus schedule to open in the fall of 2013, I honestly could not see why anyone would not take a hard look at sending their children there.
I have a child at this school and have already had one graduate. According to the one that graduated, they prepare you for life. But, we have noticed favoritism fort the students with important local celebs and if your child doesn't fit that category, you may be surprised to find that the limited-numbered things, sports or extra curricular, they may get left out and it;s obvious and hurtful. With all of that said, my current student wants to remain there. So, maybe decide if your local school is beneficial for a specific student and if not, try it. Just the christian part that makes me sad. No one should be judged at a Catholic school and no one should have power because of what your family does or is. Especially in the Flint area. hahaha
While I am a graduate of this school I recently had a child that attended Powers for four years. I am very disappointed in the quality of the educators, the curriculum and the general school environment. First, the educators do not show the level of professionalism one would expect in any school. The blatant nepotism and favoritism shown to those families of influence is astounding and not expected in a school that should be promoting Christian values, excellence and achievement! While the school does tout the fact that they have many young scholars that secure noteworthy college scholarships, I do not believe that the high school has much influence in this regard. I have since sent my other children to our public high school and have been very impressed. Bottom line...save the tuition for college.
We recently removed our child from this school for lack of academic quality. Going into junior year, our child has not written a research paper. The advanced lit. class never had an indepth class discussion or was assigned an essay. Teacher actually read Edgar Allen Poe to class in monotone. Chemistry teacher seemed inexperienced for high school level. Many issues this year, not just our family. Principal Furnas is wonderful. Wish them the best. Feel like we wasted a large sum of money this year.
Powers is an amazing school with great teachers and amazing athletics. They provide a great education in an environment that isn't found anywhere else. Everyone at the schools cares for each other, like a family, no matter what you look like or how you act you can always find people that love you for exactly who you are. The principal is fun and outgoing and some how manages to remember everyone's name, even with so many students. Everyone in the school is great and if I had to choose again I would definately choose Powers =)
While Powers is a good place for learning Christian values, its overall educational program is a bit lacking. While fairly strong in literature courses, its math and sciences (along with computer sciences) programs are weak and do not prepare students well for college. The school community as well is a bit lacking. If I had to do it all over again, I would have sent my children to Carmen-Ainsworth, where the math and science programs are excellent, and I wouldn't have felt like I was spending my hard-earned money for little to no gain.
The quality of the academic programs is unmatched in the area. Extracurricular activities flourish and give every individual the chance to be a part of the community. As a whole parents are involved to the great benefit of the school community.
Powers Catholic High school is an excellent school for students of all types. The teachers care about the student, and they try their best to make sure the student learns the material. They are well rounded in everything academics, athletics, and other extracurricular activities.
Outstanding teachers and leadership. Students grow spiritually and academically. Many students go on to do great things. Several students became physicians (>10) from my class, others became other leaders in the community. Most students go to college. Academically excellent with strong athletics and other extracurricular activities. My niece and nephew go to Powers currently and are doing extremely well. I am proud to be an alum. We do great things because of strong support from family and teachers passionate about educating students in all the ways that really matter.
Great school! The learning enviroment cannot be beat. The teachers are there because they care. The resources available to students and parents is phenomenal. The attitude at this school is college bound. Exceptional qauality education.
PCHS is an excellent school! I would reccommend it to any parent looking for quality education, college preparation, and a safe/disciplined environment for their teenager.
