When I found The Leelanau School online I loved what I saw online but I dismissed it as an option when I saw the tuition. After a year at our public school and watching my son steadily sink deeper and deeper into insecurity and just a lost sad place I decided that I had to do something. I couldn't let the financial cost prevent me from sending him because the cost of not sending him was too great. This is a decision I will never regret. My son is now a driven student, a leader, comfortable in his own skin, confident and most importantly happy. I often say he went from being fish food at his old school to being a big fish at Leelanau. He was only able to this because Leelanau gives these kids the supportive and adaptable environment so that they feel safe and comfortable to take risks, be themselves and experience success over and over again. If you are considering sending your child here, don't let the cost scare you away. If Leelanau is a good fit your child the school will help you with tuition. They really do want to help these kids. Kids who for whatever reason just are not thriving at their mainstream school.

Our son suffers from ADHD and spent 9th and 10th grades at our local public high school. While that high school is consistently rated as one of the best high schools in the United States, it was not a good fit for our son. Enter the Leelanau school. Or, as my son, wife, and I now call it: "The best high school on the planet." Our son has gone from feeling "lost" in school to feeling welcome. From getting poor grades to getting excellent grades. And from not wanting to go to school to absolutely loving it. He has blossomed into an excellent student, made lifelong friendships with fellow students from around the world, and done things he never would've done in public school (e.g., performed in plays and performed music and sang in front of a crowd..) He has done these things because he feels comfortable in his environment; an environment where all the students like and support each other and where teachers give the individualized attention students like our son need to learn. I highly recommend the Leelanau School without reservation.

As a current student here I believe that this is a great learning environment. This school can focus on each individual student because the student per teacher ratio is about 2:1. Each teacher can spend the time that each student needs with them. There are music classes that include guitar to the jazz band Mighty Snappy. The teachers, Mrs.Hood and Mr.Bloxum, let the students learn at their own pace, as does the rest of the school. Mighty Snappy plays songs that range from Bach to Mama don't dance to Van Morris' Wild Night. The other music class allow the students to write their own songs. There is required sports but the teachers make each day a blast. The parent involvement is very low due to the acct that it is a boarding school and tries to teach kids to be independent. The also allow 5 day boarders and day students.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
