INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

This school is little more than a sub-par daycare. The children are not properly supervised on the playground and the 'technology' class is little more than playtime on a computer. I am amazed that this is considered a public school in line with traditional schools.

I had a friend send me this link as kind of an inside joke. I think it's great for those of you had a good experience and believe WMAES is a good school. I won't get into all the horrible experiences I had here. I'll just say this was not the school for my children.

As a parent of 2 children attending WMAES, I have been very pleased with our experience. The teachers have been very helpful, and encourage parents to be as involved as possible with academic achievements of students. With the accelerated curriculum, yes, it does get difficult for students at times- but there are many resources to help those students who are having a difficult time. I'm glad I chose WMAES for my children's education, and look forward to many more years!

WMAES, unlike most schools, does not believe in SOCIAL PROMOTION. This is when students are passed on to the next grade level or progression of courses for the mere fact they are one year older. This eventually leads to students that cannot master grade level content and either drop out of school or are graduated from high school with under-developed skills that will not let them compete or even survive in today s society. This is the primary reason our education system has failed our children and WMAES wants nothing to do with it. Students are given the opportunity, at no financial cost, to attend summer school and catch-up with their fellow students at their grade level. Sometimes this works and other times it is just not enough time to catch the student up to grade level. Regardless, WMAES is making every effort to only promote students that are prepared to move to the next grade level with the needed academic skills to succeed. Kudo s to WMAES for doing the right thing.

Absolutely do not send your kids here. Teachers and principal are unwilling to work for the best intrest of your child. I'm a very involved parent, but WMAES makes it very difficult with their "there's only one way attitude." I can not believe how many kids who have been held back at this school or had to attend Summer school (thankfully not mine). I know it sounds crazy, but it's almost like it's set up for them to fail.....More money for the school??? I don't know, but do your selves a favor and keep looking.

I attened WMAES from 3rd Grade all the way up until I graduated. All of my siblings will graduate from WMAES. My little brother started there in kindergarten. This is theeeee bessssst school ever. The teachers are great, they never allowed us to give up. If we couldnt do something they strive to help us, giving up wasnt an option. They only want the best for us. When I was struggling with work in highschool my middle school teachers were even offering to help me on homework and help tutor me. I couldnt be more blessed to have been to such a great school. WMAES is definitely a great school all the way around. Im so happy my mom enrolled me there Thanks to all my Teachers & to the principal Mr.Morgan.

I have two daughters who atten WMAES; One in Pre-K, the other in first grade. I can't even explain in words how much my family loves this school. Coming from a public school I see so many differences and improvemrnts in their education. My daughters both love science, technology, Spanish, and gym class. What we like most is that the teacher incorporate outdoor activities with each subject, including math and English classes! Outdoor activies intrigue my children which makes them more excited about learning new things. I love when they come home and tell me about their day! Sometimes, I even learn fun things from them that they've learned from their teachers and other classmates. I highly recommend this school! The WMAES staff is absolutely wonderful!

my daugther has attended WMAES since 2nd grade. I moved her here from public school. She is now in 4th grade and loves everything about this school. I decided to try this school because my daughter had so many friends attending this school from her soccer team. The parents spoke highly of the school and how the students are so connected to the environment. This school has lots of hands on learning not just reading from text books all day. The students are challenged and able to explore the world right on the acres of the school grounds. One thing that I LOVE is powerschool. Every monday if you are signed up you get weekly emails about your students performance in the classroom. Its a total break down class by class assignment by assignment so you will now if you'e student did not turn something in. If your students grades do drop they attend what is called Academic Acceleration for more study time. They strive for success and keep the parents involved. I could have not picked a better school for my daughter. I encourage you to check it out for yourself if your interested. Every school is not for every student. One this I HATE is the paring lot at 745am am 237. ;/

I attended W.M.A.E.S from 9th-12th grade. I played varsity sports there and loved all of my teachers. They are all friendly and welcoming. The staff cares about our education and helping us grow. The outdoors is amazing and very beautiful. Overall this is one of the best schools I ever attended.

This is our first year with WMAES and it has been a great one! Our daughters are blessed with phenomenal teachers who push them academically and care for them. I have witnessed their growth in so many way over the past 6 months. We appreciate the experiences for hands on learning and the unique opportunities the campus offers for outdoor learning. Can't wait to see how they grow with WMAES iin the following years!

I enrolled my two children three years ago and they have greatly improved academically since their first year. This school is designed to keep kids and their families on track and engaged in the learning process. The hands-on approach is very refreshing and my kids love their teachers and look forward to going to school. So many fun and educational things to experience at WMAES!!!

After seven years in a traditional public school setting we decided that our out of the box thinker needed more! He needed to be challenged and encouraged to apply what he is learning through daily curriculum to other parts of his life. The staff at WMAES has surpassed our expectations and we thank them all for their hard work, dedication and compassion.

WMAES has created a learning environment where children can learn in a safe, structured, & creative setting. My son has improved greatly in his school work and study skills since beginning at WMAES. He also retains what he learns thanks to the hands on learning.

My school is perfect for ALL my kids! With a kind, accepting student body, dedicated teachers, help for the struggling student, and opportunities to excel for a gifted student this school offers everything my family needs. Best of all, my kids get to enjoy it in an Eco-diverse, beautiful, 62 acre setting! I love the uniform policy, and the strict discipline makes me feel like I'm sending my kids to a safe place. This was not the most conveniently located school we could have chosen, but it has definitely been the BEST school we could have chosen for our family! I highly recommend this school to anyone!

I have multiple kids attending school here. It is a good school. I like the individual teachers the kids have had so far and love that they spend time outside! The elementary teachers are not great about updating the online parent portal, but they answer emails quickly. My only real problem with the school is the crazy use of summer school. My oldest was in 8th grade last year taking 9th grade classes with As and Bs, but they wanted him in summer school because his test score was low?!? In my opinion, kids that pass with As and Bs should NOT have to go to summer school!

I love this school. Where my child is great at a subject they challenge her even more so she's not bored. The teachers are great with parent teacher communication. When they have a concern I'm contacted and we work together to find a solution. I love how they teacher about gardening and other outdoor activities even in the winter there is snow shoeing. Most importantly they stick with their rules. They will not put up with kids disrespecting others. Karen kiss (Mother of a first grader)

I have been a parent at this school for six years and have experienced all three levels of education here (elementary, middle and high school) as well as special education provisions. My students have been thoroughly supported (they even initiated the special ed assessment for one of my children) in their academic learning. The after-school tutoring (with teachers, required any time a child is struggling with a topic and reassessed every two weeks) and small classes were key to my autistic child outgrowing her need for special ed. She's now a successful college freshman. My elementary-aged child is THRIVING after being held back a grade; I appreciate that they didn't just pass him along like so many other schools would. We love the environmental, hands-on, kids-outside, one-size-does-NOT-fit-all approach this school has. Communication was initially a struggle and family activities were lacking, but HUGE strides have been made in these areas. Parental involvement opportunities exist, but too few parents take advantage of them; it's making some progress and will only continue to improve. I highly recommend this school! (J. Gilman - 1st grade & alumnus parent)

The teachers at this school are great. My daughter can be a bit of a handful at times and her teacher makes sure I am involved in knowing when she acts out, how she solves the problem and how my daughter reacts to that. I find this helpful. I like to know what goes on, which her teacher always informs me. Not just about the negatives either. I also love the family nights. My daughter gets so happy to show me her school and friends. The activities are always fun too. Jenna Engberg Mom of Saelyn Engberg (pre-k)

This school is just ok for me. I think the biggest problem is all your suggestions are ignored. The teachers have a way of doing something and they want to stick with it even if it's not working for your child. The teachers treat and expect all students to learn the same way. Also, If your child is behind on something, DO NOT expect to hear something from the teachers. I have a child that has been going there for 2 years and one that has been there for three years, and some teachers are better than others. Maybe this is the reason that they can't seem to keep the same teachers. The school is already on their 3rd principal since my youngest has started...kind of makes you wonder why. If your considering this school, I would really look around first.

This is my first year teaching at this school, but I can already see how much the teachers care for their students. We have a teacher that is up for Michgian Charter School Teacher of the Year, we have teachers that are always collaborating with one another, and we have an awesome support staff through the principal. We have smaller class sizes and Individualized Student Learning Plans, so the instruction is more individualized. Not only are the teachers teaching the academic part, but they are also teaching the students life skills and good character traits like responsibility, respect, and compassion.

Worst decision I ever made was bringing my child here. They tell you they want parent input but believe me it's like talking to a brick wall. Whatever your concern is You hear oh we wasn't aware of that we'll look into it and make necessary changes-nothing ever changes. If you have a perfect child all is well but if your child has trouble remembering to turn in assignments or any normal issues you would expect from kids all they can say is your child needs to become more organized and responsible. WMAES they are children they do not always remember - try being their teacher, contact the parents if there is an issue, we shouldn't be hearing about it at conferences. Why can't teachers post and scan a copy of homework when you assign it. If parents are able to see what has been assigned each night and if necessary print a copy it would be easier for us to keep track of their homework. Why do we not see what has been assigned until its late. It would only take a couple of minutes and save us having to call and e-mail about missing assignments after they are late. Apparently the way you've always done it isn't working. You've heard from a parent we'll see if anything changes.

This school has failed my child on multiple occasions. When she started at this school last year I was told they think she needs to repeat kindergarten. I only agreed to this based on them stating they would put her in 1st grade AA and continue to check her progress to see if she can move into 1st grade. Needless to say this never happened even after continually telling the teacher this is what was promised. now my child is a grade behind and no one is going out of their way to correct the situation. The only thing they say they can do is what they promised to do last year. What a failure. Just last night my daughter informs me her teacher asked her (a 7 year old) "why is she in 2nd grade AA if she can't read". Is this really the way you speak to chdren? The school and teachers are NOT up to par.

The school added two more day camps to their summer program, they offer free meals over the summer for anyone 18 years old and under, their summer school is even more personal than during the school year and they are making plans to expand. It is a school that requires a student to achieve at least C average in everything but encourages each student to go beyond that. Strong focus on science and the environment but also focused on overall academics that will prepare a student for the future. The school is always trying to move forward in the areas of academics, growth, teamwork, and anti-bullying and is always looking for ways to improve in those four areas.

My Son is a sophmore this year at WMA-ES (his second year) he was very bored with our public school and wanted a change. He has a 3.56 gpa and is doing very well. He likes all of his teachers and even though he does not prefer English class, he has had a couple of teachers that make this a much more interesting class for him. Thanks to all the teachers there!

My children have been attending this school for four years. I really like this school. My belief is that no matter what school, you are bound to have a year or more of teachers that you feel are not as good as others. Obviously. So yes my children have had a teacher than I felt could have done better. You will also have just as many problems with bullying or parent to teacher communication with any school your children attend. There seems to be many changes taking place at the school over the last few years and last year could have gone better, but. . . I have complete faith in this school to continue progressing and becoming an even BETTER school. As a parent of WMAES I know that if you put in the time to be involved with your children's academics and speak with the teachers and principles you will get the help and/or advice you need and expect. Thank you WMAES! I love this school! WMAES staff, you're MY families, second family!

As an employee of this school I have to say that I truly disagree with those people who say that the administration is horrible. I see what the principals are dealing with everyday and they do a tremendous job. Our principals came in to this job with a mess to clean up and I believe they have been doing that. WMAES is a tremendous school with a lot of support for both staff and students. I would not hesitate to send a student here.

I have taught at this school for the past few years, and I can tell you that there are many great teachers, but the administration is horrible. All the teachers are constantly looking for new jobs because we all feel like we are in a constant fear of losing our own jobs. Administration does not care about its staff or the students. I believe the main goal for this school is for the people higher up to make money, because we certainly don't see any of it being spent in the classroom on the students. I would never send my child to this school. It has a lot of potential, but as long as the same principals are working here, nothing will change

This school has really good teachers, however this school goes through teachers like it goes through toliet paper. The principal acts like he cares so much about his students , but if you have a problem, he will do everything in his power to avoid you. It takes going waaaaay over his head to get any type of problems solved. I recommend you move into Kenowa district or find a friend that lives in kenowa district. If you really do not like your kids, then by all means send them to this school!

The school was great, i enjoyed my time spent there, but the communication from parent to the administration sucked. What i mean by that is when a parent expresses their concern the school does a bad job of fixing the problem and the problem still persists until it is too late and fights start between the students. The teachers were amazing even though they usually didnt keep the same teacher more than 1 year. Very few teachers had been kept more than that. All around great school but dont expect your concerns to be taken care of by the administators.

I am the godparent to students at this school and I see great things there. The students are really learning and the staff is very helpful. I enjoy my visits there and when my son is old enough for preschool and if we are still in Michigan he will be going there. I enjoy the small class sizes and the individual attention I see my godchildren receive on my visits and that I hear them talk about. I have heard good things about the new principal that started this year and about the high school principal who is on his second year I think. They both seem to really care about their students not just their studies either, their health and their life. I recommend this school for everyone to at least try.

I like the volleyball team, anyone 7-12 grade can try out and anyone with good grades can play if they are on the team. My teachers really seem to care and even put up with me coming in before school to ask for help. It's not the greatest school probably but I like it.

My children have attended this school for quite a few years. It has been improving every year until this year. They fired the high school principal and gave the position to the elementary principal. The new principal is young and has no experience with high school students. Things have really gone downhill in the last few months. The reason the school has done so well is because of the commitment and caring of the principal they let go. Many of the parents and staff are outraged and many won't be returning next year. He made this school what it is and because of him our school won an award for excellence. it's too bad that the management treated him so unfairly and let their own personal feelings get in the way. He put everything he had into this school. He put kids first and isn't that what it's all about?

There are not many sports at this school to actually help achieve full potential in kids. This school has a tough education setting and they do not 'believe' in D's. So your children need to get A-C's to pass. Some of the teachers do not know what they are teaching, if they are teaching. Most teachers sit at their desk and have the kids do it on thier own. I do not recommend this school unless you want to have a strict school with not much help to your children.

The Academy is one of the first charter schools in Michigan and we have been there for five years now. The staff is caring and supportive, the education my children are receiving is wonderful. The classes are small and personable. The addition of a new 7-12 building on the 62 acre campus allows for growth and shows our schools potential. With recent state budget cuts we are going thru many of the same issues as other schools concerning our budget but it does not affect my children's education in anyway that I see. The staff is dedicated to giving every student the education they deserve. The Academy has not always been shown in a favorable way in the local press but I feel that being a Charter school just brings more attention to us. Our school is a normal public school that offers a more private school like education.
