having 3 kids through this school, and 1 in 8th grade I have watched and seen this school decline. this school is full of bullies and if you complain the bullied child gets punished not the bully. alot of the teachers do not teach or care about the students, a few due but most do not.

Pinewood is a great school. One daughter just finished three years at Pinewood and another is still at Pinewood. They have great teachers who know my daughter. I like that the principal and office staff actually care about my concerns. They have a great orchestra and band program.

My child has attended Pinewood for two years and we are very pleased with the quality instruction, excellent teachers and administration. Pinewood has a large population which has been professionally managed by the staff. I am surprised to read that a few reviewers complain about homework and bullies. Homework has not been overwhelming and resources are available for children experiencing harassment and inappropriate behaviors. From my experience as a Guidance Counselor in a different District, quite often parents choose not be actively involved in their child's school experiences but complain. It's sad when parents refuse to contact instructors and staff about concerns, refuse to volunteer and create expectations for our children's educators to take on responsibilities parents should embrace for the holistic care of their own children. Pinewood is an excellent school and we have enjoyed working with the instructors and staff to create a healthy learning environment for our child.

There are huge problems at Pinewood Middle School with discipline and bullying. I've had 4 children go through this school and the decline in the quality of education and there inability to keep kids safe is why I would never recommend this school to any one.

Pinewood has been amazing. My daughter has flourished and the administration staff makes a bigger school feel small. My son will be attending next year. Kentwood public is a great district. We sold our home and refused to leave the district and could of gone anywhere.

I am a parent of 3 students who currently attend Pinewood Middle School and I am also a substitute teacher who regularly teaches there as well. Let me tell you it is the BEST middle school that Kentwood has! I love the staff, the teachers, the kids, everything =) My 3 kids love Pinewood and they have never been bullied or teased, ever. The staff cares, the teachers are amazing and the whole atmosphere is just uplifting. Great school! Out of the 3 that Kentwood has, Pinewood is the one I would recommend to anyone, as a mom and as a teacher.

Middle school is a transitional period that is difficult for some students and some teachers at ALL schools. I have one son currently at Pinewood and one that was there for all 3 years. Both get good grades and are active in sports. Pinewood has good incentives that reward good behavior with trips and priviledges. I like the online grades system and am able to intervene and help my kids get the grades up before it is too late. If the student or parent shows interest in improving grades, the teachers will work with you. I've read a few reviews and it is unfortunate that some parents believe that their child's happiness and grades are the fault of the teachers and school.

Pinewood has long been known to be the best all-around school in Kentwood. With the change in Principal a year ago, the availability of programs and parent involvement has increased significantly.

A school is supposed to be challanging and is supposed to help you when you need it. I as a student in high school think that Pinewood did great in both of these areas. The teachers offer times to come in after school and work with you if you need it. Pinewood is amazing and was excellent for me. The discipline there is phenominal. Yes the population is large, but the diversity is great and helps get you ready for your life choices. You will have problems at any school with bullies but the school handles them wisely.

This school has been great for my son. The teachers are caring yet hold him accountable. I am pleased with how he is becoming more responsible.

My son enjoys very little about Pinewood. Many of the students are rough, to say the least. They try to keep a handle on situations that arise, but understandably, with such a large number of students, this is impossible. As parents we appreciate many of the veteran teachers, and their hard work. If it wasn't for the many behavioral problems in the school, and the overly populated student body, we would have rated it much higher.

My son is going to the 7th grade at Pinewood. He's still seems a little lost there. I wish the counselors would talk to all the students privately about any and everything and see how they are doing and let them know that they are there for them. They should not wait until there is a big problem.

I think it should be a 1 because my daughter had to transfer schools because of bullies. There are definently health issues because my daughter is always complaining she's not feeling well after school. She got way to much homework and to much stress in her teenage life! she always got pressured and teased and cried mearly everyday. She had horrible grades and claimed that teacher were to harsh on her to. That is why it should be a 1. Its rediculous how horrible pinewood is and I could keep listing things forever but I'll be nice and not continue.

About the tests

In 2013-2014 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. Currently, GreatSchools' ratings reflect 2013 MEAP results; ratings will be updated after 2014 Michigan Merit Examination (MME) results are released. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. In addition, they have recalculated past years' results using these new standards for proficiency, making the above year-over-year results comparable.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
