Our family loves Kerby Elementary School. We feel the safe, nurturing environment is providing just what my kids need -- and they are very different from each other! The staff is highly competent, very well educated and most importantly, they love children. MEAP scores are amazing, but they aren't the primary focus. Also amazing are the character education programs, the art, music, gym, and library. Overall, it is very well-rounded program.
Love the office staff! The kindergarten program is amazing.
What a great school! The teachers are all very nice and very good at what they do. The property taxes are high here, but you get what you pay for, meaning the higher salaries attract top-notch teachers. Great neighborhood school. The kids all live close enough to play together. Terrific interaction between parents and staff. Great school spirit. They spend a few minutes every day teaching the kids to be proud of themselves. The Principal knows almost all of the kids' names and the kids all like her. A lot of extra-curricular activities offered through Community Ed, Parks and Rec and The Neighborhood Club. The teachers do a very nice job of teaching to the individual child's learning level. The test scores are always among the tops in the state. Bullying is almost non-existent. Tons of extracurriculars offered through Community Ed, Parks and Rec and the Neighborhood Club. Great school!
Overall, Kerby is a wonderful neighborhood elementary school. Parents are very involved, walking their children to and from school, helping out in the classroom, doing extra projects, etc. Special Education (IEP, in-school specialists, understanding of issues, preparation to assimilate into classroom, etc) capabilities were below what we experienced elsewhere. (However, middle school was much better at incorporating Spec Ed into its curriculum.) Very responsive teachers with high expectations for their students. Population is mostly affluent here, which might make those who are less than affluent feel like they cannot compete with what kids do in their spare time (dance, tennis, travel). Because it is a neighborhood school, children live near their classmates and can play together outside of school. Strong school spirit, good playground, nice atmosphere, good emphasis on learning. We moved away, but would highly recommend Kerby to anyone thinking about moving to Grosse Pointe Farms.
Kerby is an outstanding school. Parental involvement is very high and discipline problems are almost nill. A great little school, terrific staff and supportive principal.
