This school doesn't have an Blue Ribbon for nothing. I absolutely love this school. I look forward to going every day. Everyone is friendly and there is rarely bullying. but of course, no matter what school you go to, there will be bullying. Though it rarely happens, the teachers and staff are always ready to step in and so are the students. This school takes their sports really seriously, so if you're a sports fan, this is probably the perfect school for you. Most of the teachers are great at their jobs and ready to help the student when needed. I wouldn't trade this school for anything. I love going here.

There are a few things I have to say about this school. The teachers are wonderful, but the administration is the exact opposite. The administration doesn't ever give students a second chance, unless that child participates in sports. Then they give that student as many chances as the student needs. The ladies in the office and the principal are very unprofessional. Also, the computers classes are a bit dumbed-down, I did the same thing in 6th grade computers in AZ as I did in 9th and 10th grade computers there.

Houghton High School is the only Blue Ribbon Exemplary School in the Upper Peninsula. They have a nice mix of new and veteran teachers and an administrative team that keeps the school safe and sound for our kids. They offer a rigorous curriculum for all students, including 4 in-house AP classes plus Distance Learning, Michigan Virtual High School, and dual enrollment opportunities readily available. For a small school (about 475 students) they have a lot to offer.

Houghton high school is the best high school in the keweenaw peninsula. the school is very safe and the teachers are mostly pretty good. it is also the only school in the upper peninsula that received a blue ribbon award from the state of michigan. I have 2 kids that go here and they like most of their teachers. one problem I have with this school is that the only foreign language offered is spanish. more languages should be offered. the school has a great music program with one of the best music teachers I know but the administration-especially the principals-don't seem to care about the music program much-they care more about sports. the school offers a variety of sports but my children love soccer and the school doesn't have a soccer program. the school also doesn't have many cultural/ethnic programs but it's still one of the best schools I know.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Michigan used the Michigan Merit Examination (MME) to assess students in grade 11 in reading, writing, math, science and social studies. The MME is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the state standard.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MME test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
