My son was at CSA from kindergarten to about 3/4 of the way through 2nd grade. We decided to move him as the state run school can offer him way more as he has special needs. If your kid is self motivated and does not require any specialized tuition this is the school for you. On deciding to move our child no one has replied to e-mails or phone calls, it's as if you decide to leave and you no longer exist or matter. I find this unprofessional and to be honest rude, I had doubts about moving, now I have none.
I am a student as CSPA HS and I am very pleased with how the teachers handles things considering the pressure they are under from the administrators who appear to dictate how classrooms are run. This is unfortuante it creates stress for the teachers and frustrates the kids such as myself. One fo the biggest things I recently noticed was how the new principal at CSPA has began to run each individual classes requirements without being involved in the class himself. Other the other hand the teachers are great, the classes are educational and I love it here
Our children are learning so much at CSA. The teachers we have had really care about the kids in their classrooms. In response to the reviews about bullies, our kids have not experienced this. In contrast, their friends and many of their classmates are kind and respectful. We recall a couple of kids in past years that I was happy to see leave CSA, but I don't think that is unique to any one school. I have encountered students helping other students in the hallways, offering to carry things or opening doors for parents. While this may not look like "education" to most, it is integral in learning to be part of a community, and it speaks to the feeling throughout the school. We are so happy with everything, from curriculum to staff to parent involvement. A school is only as good as its staff and families.
This is our first year at Charyl Stockewell and we love it. We feel our daughter is getting very personalized teaching. The teachers are enthusiastic and involved. The principal is hands-on, and knows each of the kids' names = awesome! We also see a high level of parent involvement. We feel lucky to have discovered this school.
my kid can hardly read can hardly spell she's got her Christmas list on the refrigerator she's in 7th grade but yet Stockwell is giving her all 100 percent ,she is sitting at home waiting for Cheryl Stockwell to send papers over to her new school they sent over 4 out of the 13th she needs very frustrating ,she told her teacher she was going to a new school without me talking to any of the school people the teacher said Oh you don't have to do any work today because you're going to be leaving the gave her a hug on another note my other kid was was there for 2 months got his iPod stolen because there is a no lock policy on locker
As with any school, I believe the experience you have has a lot to do with the individual teachers, and if an issue arises how the administration handles that issue. I've had awesome experiences with teachers, and some not so awesome experiences with teachers and administration who made up too many excuses for my son getting continually bullied. I'm glad I didn't give up when I had a bad experience because my son has excellent teachers now and they work with him as an individual not just as a number. I couldn't be happier with the amount of attention, detail, and genuine concern his current teachers give him now.
I'm not sure why the thought in the reviews that Academically Gifted are favored keeps coming up. There is no structured or beneficial program at CSA for AG students. There is a lame attempt at providing some topics of interests a few times a year and at best, the classroom teachers are burdened with accelerating the curriculum, but the narrow-minded powers that be in the school have something in place for face value, only. Most of the teachers are there not for the salary but because they are truly educators in all sense of the word. The admistration seems to have an elitest attitude and in the last 3 yrs I have not once been greeted by or talked to by the principal and Stockwell's. The bullying policy or lack thereof is a horrible. A parent would do best taking it into their own hands as I did after I was told I was not allowed to find out who hit and left a big bruise on my child. In summary, teachers are exceptional, admin, after-school program, extracurricular, "gifted" and special education- very poor. I don't see it getting better and that is why I pulled my students out.
I have had several years of experience with this school, including working as a volunteer several hours a week with children who were behind in reading. My experience volunteering led me to pull my children out of the school all together. The amount of children who cannot read in this school is astonishing. I was absolutely amazed at how kids could be passed along into 3rd/4th grade and still not know how to read basic 3 letter words! I worked with many kids who were moved along each year despite not knowing how to read, spell, add, ect. I couldn't believe it. Also the bullying issue is very real. My son was bullied and despite numerous attempts to talk with the teachers nothing was ever done. The only advice I received was to tell my son to "talk out the problem" which was not a proper solution to someone who was bullying him everyday. I would urge anyone thinking about sending their children here to think very carefully before doing so.
My child attended CSA for years. Having worked in both traditional public schools and in charter schools in administrative positions, I can say that CSA stands true to it's mission. Best practices are in sought and taught. Students flourish at their own pace. Long lasting relationships are formed for students, parents, and staff. CSA is more than a school. It is a place to learn, to grow, to prepare for the future. All in a safe and nurturing environment. Who could ask for more? My child is grown. My grandchild is now attending CSA. Having worked in so many different schools, I can state that CSA has proven to be one of the most forward-thinking schools in this area and I am happy to sing their praises. If you have any doubts, just arrange for a tour. The level of student engagement is amazing, and you will not meet a nicer group of talented, caring people in which to entrust your child's education.
As a former teacher at CSA I experienced the favoritism for a certain kind of student (gifted) disturbing. If your child is not labeled by the school as gifted do not send them there. If your child needs special services (other then gifted) they will not get them. Teachers leave because they are not supported by the administration, are asked to work far more hours then in a public school system and are paid less for all the extra work. Try preparing lessons for multiple grades and extreme differences in ability, it is not like preparing a math or science lesson for a single level. Add to this the unfair treatment of students who are a problem in the classroom (if not labeled as gifted) and you get an atmosphere that does not lead to a good education for any but highly motivated students. The facade that the school presents to prospective families is not the reality. The families are great and many of the teachers are as well, but the model does not work!
We have been at CSA/CSPA for 3 years. I have two children that are about as opposite as opposite can be. One is gifted and his teachers challenge him in every subject, not just the ones that he excels at. They have shared books for us to read to better help our child branch out socially and in turn have read these books on their own time. Our other child is not so lucky academically. Ever since regular public school pushed him through without teaching him, school has been a constant struggle and always will be. Every single teacher he has had at CSA/CSPA has gone the extra mile to help him. We share our concerns and they address them. We as parents are our children's advocate. If you don't share problems or issues with the school, then how do you expect them to be solved? It takes a well informed and involved parent to help their children regardless what school choice you make to help your child be successful. My children both love going to school and also thank us for making the change. Yes, we have had issues at this school, but we worked through them with determination and communication.
I am currently in seventh grade at CSPA middle school and I believe that this school provides me with an adequate learning environment for my abilities as a student. In advisory we are placed into mentor groups in order to receive help form older students or help the younger ones with more challenging subjects. The school does their best to pair a student with the same advisory teacher throughout their three years of middle school so they can receive continued support from a teacher that knows their strengths and weaknesses. In literature we have reveiwed many famous author's work. Some of these authors include E B White, Virginia Woolf, Kurt Vonnegut, Edgar Allen Poe, and Shakespeare. Overall the school is able to fit every student's needs for education. What it really boils down to is the work ethic of your child. I find that it is rather pointless to blame the school for a child's lack of accountability or perseverance. Those are important character traits that should be enforced at home as well as at school. Even though there are some students at CSPA with mental disabilities, there are many classes and choices for students who are academically gifted.
Wonderful school! Great families, teachers and children. This is a fantastic school for all children. We are so happy here.
We love this school. It is filled with wonderful and kind children, caring teachers and families. I would not change a thing about this school. It is a gem!!!
I know of a few different families that have gone to CSA. I know from experience that if your child is ADHD the teachers there will just pass them along to the next grade. Thiis child never turned in his homework but when report cards came out he had B's and C's. That was based on never turning in homework.. I do not understand how you can move forward when you never do the work. Also this child would get in trouble quite often but the other child involved would never get a detention . So this student goes on to the next grade level when he barely can add and subtract. Teacher at CSA do not care about their students the troubled ones that need the extra help just keep getting passed onto the next teacher to deal with. I would NEVER send my kids to CSA.
Great ideas, horrible follow-through, especially in the high school. Parents usually love this school in the early grades and, by the time they get to the higher grades (upper middle school and high school), they realize this is NOT a progressive or positive learning environment. Yes, it might be less stressful, but it is not the "real world" and your kids will fall horribly far behind. And forget being a competitive candidate for a good college (unless you have a VERY strong parent or other adult working in your corner) - the classes this school provides do NOT work well toward acceptance into a good college, and although one or two of the teachers may be knowledgeable regarding college applications, the administration falls FAR short of being able to do their part in this regard (and try to pass this job off on "the other guy" when asked for assistance). MAYBE this will be a good school in several years, but why be the experimental kids? RIGHT NOW you should stay FAR FAR away!!! Lots of openings here... why? Because LOTS of families are getting out.
This is our 7th year at CSA. I have one in the middle school and 2 in the elementary. All three kids continue to test well above their grade level. I have appreciated the individualized approach to education that the school is amazingly been able to maintain. It would be much easier to take a one-size-fits-all approach, I'm sure. The teachers and administrators are caring and wonderful and love what they do. MOST OF ALL, my kids love going to school, love learning and I know they are growing in a safe environment. I am particularly impressed with the unit study approach in the middle school and the fact that at CSPA, middle school is a joyful place.
I I find it interesting that of the 23 students in CSPA's first graduating class of those actually accepted into college only 3 still remain enrolled in college. The others dropped out because they couldn't handle the workload. Such is the consequence of a school system like CSA's.
My 2 children have been enrolled in this school system for 5 yrs. The school is growing at a rapid rate & continues to modify its curriculum to meet the changing needs of it's students. I have seen quick turnover with some new teachers but they also have many committed enthusiastic teachers too. While the school system is not perfect, it is MUCH better than having drug sniffing dogs patrol the halls, which has happened at the "A" rated public school my kids would be attending if not for CSA/CSPA. I know of at least 4 families that left our local public schools to attend this school. This is not a "special needs" school, it is a special school. It is adaptable, creative, and cutting edge. ALL schools are faced with including & responding to "special needs" students, bullying, teacher turnover, stress to perform & to meet state standards, etc. This school is right for those who have made an informed choice for their children's education and are comfortable with a long term approach to supporting their children's overall development . While I have not always liked responses to specific issues - overall we are very satisfied & are staying at least through middle school.
I was a teacher at this school and felt nothing but stress while working there. Our classrooms were not properly equipped with teaching materials and the school tended to attract kids with serious problems. These were not addressed adequately since the philosophy of the school was to please the students and parents no matter what. It is run by a management company that is very focused on bringing in the money from the state. The teachers make about .5 of other public school teachers and are not supported by the administration with discipline issues, resouces, etc. If a parent complains about the teacher due to any type of academic or behavior issue even when the teacher has acted properly handled the problem, the teacher is on his or her own, hence the big turnover of faculty. I would not recomend this school for anyone.
