Jackson public schools offers the greatest variety of academic programs in Jackson county. They have highly qualified teachers and test scores are on a continual rise. The curriculum is aligned with state benchmarks and GLCE's. The teachers go above and beyond to make sure students are learning and that parents are well informed of their child's progress. They have outstanding music programs and provide sports through middle and high school. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate in classroom activities.

As a parent, volunteer, and employee of this school, I have seen a number of things. The number of students at the school is overwhelming for the staff, and they are unable to control the students. Many students 'fall through the cracks'. By fourth grade, the students cannot correctly: form letters, write a cohesive sentence, add to two digits, subtract, etc. The basic curriculum is failing the majority of the students. My children were in the accelerated program, open to students in the 95th IQ percentile and above. While they are separated in class, every other time of day these children are subjected to the affects of a school run by students, where the lowest common denominator rules. Children swear at teachers, there is fighting in the halls, theft is routine, and children sleep in their classes. I would strongly recommend a different school.

My children went to Frost and were satisfied up until the last 3-4 years. The principal is too busy pretending around the parents. The children run the school making it appear to be a battle zone. The teachers are forced to compensate by being almost military and too forceful. It took me several attempts to get in to speak to Mr. Cook and when I did, he had his arms crossed over his chest and was very defensive. I removed my child and placed her into Dibble School and was VERY impressed.

My children have had wonderful experiences at Frost School. There are many programs to meet their interests and the staff is enthusiastic and caring. The principal puts kids first and is professional and nurturing to all students. The building has many improvements and offers a positive learning environment. A very friendly place for students to thrive!

I think Frost is the best school in Jackson. The staff is excellent and the principal stands alone - above all others. I would send my kids here anytime - you should too! A+++++ ratiing

My daughters went to this school for a total of 14 years combined. It was wonderful in the beginning, but during the last 3 years, it has been horrible. The principal does not have time for you and almost seems fake. He puts on that plastic smile when parents are around and is not available to talk to. Neither the principal nor the teachers discipline the students in a professional manner.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
