I attended Lewton, my oldest child attended Lewton & back then Lewton was a great school. I unfortunately have had to pull my kids from this school. The teacher quality is beyond poor right now, apparently the kids are being babysat instead of being taught in some classes. I loved Lewton & always wanted my children to attend the same schools that I did. They continue to pull the good teachers and send them elsewhere in the district, Mr. Briggs, & Mrs. Vicary for example. The school hasn't been the same since Ms. Robinson. Benero's not there for the children, Cindy runs that school, she knows more about what is going on there than Benero. However, they do have the best 5th grade teacher in the district...Mrs. Atherton. I may return my child to Lewton if she is still there! I pray that the Admin pulls her from there & soon!

I switched my daughter from another elemntary school in Lansing to Lewton, and am very pleased. I love Lewton. All the staff are friendly and my daughter can learn a lot more.

I have 3 children that have attended for the last two yrs and now my youngest is following in their footsteps. I feel that every teacher that has taught my children has made them excel higher and are more eager to learn. Mrs. Bernero and Ms. Lewis are the greatest, they take the children in there care feelings in consideration and really listen to them. As long as I'm in the Lansing area my children will stay in Lewton until they have to advance to Middle school. Keep up the great job Mrs. Bernero!

This is a very good school. My son attended for kindergarten and will attend for 1st grade. Teachers and principal, Ms. Bernero, were excellent.

Extremly pleased under the leadership of Ms. Robinson (5 stars), unfortunately it did not continue with the new leadership. Vital proceedures and protocals, as with safety patrol and visitors are no longer in full effect. Disipline has gone down and many 'top level children' have been rightfully pulled out by their parents. My child will not be returning in the fall. It's unfortunate that such a good school is going down hill.

Under the leadership of Ms. Edna Robinson, Lewton Elementary has become an outstanding school with a great reputation. Academics are very important in this school and extra curricular activities come second. I hope that new prinicpal will continue to strive for excellence in academics as well.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
