I love the small class sizes and the small student to adult ratio. The staff is great with kids and very caring.

I think the recent building renovation and expansion (a new gym, an art room, a new library, renovated classrooms) have helped make an already strong program even better. Mar Lee has always been known for the quality and commitment of its teachers and for a nurturing supportive community (including parents). The quality of its programs in art, music, and drama is unusual for a public school this size. The student body is economically diverse and has some ethnic diversity (although this needs to increase). The school's leadership (school board, superintendent, principal) has been excellent on the financial side, but it has sometimes lacked a sense of vision.

I think it is great, with parent involvement, the school has grown over the years. My husband was one of the first class K-8 graduating class. As all schools, there are challenges. I am concerned with the math department, meeting the needs one on one with student. Especially now with the no child left behind standards. I don't feel Math has the support it needs for students.

I am very pleased with Mar Lee school. My daughter is very advanced and the school has really catered to keep her interested and challenged with special projects. They keep her learning and having a drive for more!

Through school of choice I send my son to this school. It's a descision I'm very pleased with. The staff is phenomenal and truly caring. Their love of children and education is apparent as soon as you walk into the building or classroom. Mar Lee is making wonderwful building improvements starting in the spring that will really bring this school to life!

It's not the bricks and mortar, that make a good school. It's the educators and teachers, not the size of the gym or the age of a bathroom. I am product of this rural school and this was the best experience of my life. This small school allowed for individual attention to students not only by the teachers but by every staff member from school bus drivers to the kitchen staff.

I feel that this school needs to be updated it hasn't had any restoration since 1962 when it was built. Same bathrooms and a very small gym. The principal doesn't take any leadership at all when it comes down to trouble or problems that involves the kids. He doesn't like the hassel it seems. Never follows through on disipline.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
