Overcrowding is a huge problem in both the Elementary and later elementary schools. Mattawan continues to have open enrollment for out of district students, which takes away from OUR students. Make Mattawan accoiuntable for their lack of judgement in continuing to have open enrollement. We are moving in the spring and going back to Portage Public schools.
If you have a smart kid this school is for you. If you have a special needs child...forget it, they have NO INTEREST in educating our special needs children to properly teach our children. Very poor in the Special Ed. Area.
I am a graduate of Mattawan and all of my children attend Mattawan. We have one in each building this year and the teachers and staff are wonderful. The classes are the right size, and there are always a parent or two roaming around the room somewhere. My son whom is in Middle School has ADHD and the school has be phenominal in helping him in every way possible, we have a meet and greet with the teachers every year before school starts and we always have a game plan. My son in Later Elementary has had troubles with his reading and since kindergarden he has been in a group called 'Read Naturally' and a few days a week he 'travels' to an intense reading program. His reading and comprehention skills soared these last few years. Continued on next post
We recently relocated to the area from overseas. We have two daughters at this school (4th and 5th grades). We couldn't be happier with our decision to attend this district after interviewing others in the area. We love the one campus approach as all of our children are together. This school does a phenomenal job of matching childrens' learning styles and personalities with teachers. Parents have involvement and are even able to give input for class selction for following years. This school has helped our daughters to adjust to school in the U.S. As a public school we feel we are getting a private school atmosphere in respect to individual attention, academics, special classes and parental involvement.
I am the parents of two children who attend Mattawan. My oldest is in middle school and has had a wonderful experience. Great teachers - good environment. My younger son who is in 3rd grade is special needs. I would agree with the poster under early el regarding the treatment and services for special needs. For an average child this school works but I would not recommend enrolling special needs as services lack and funding comes before the 'best interest of the child.'
