disappointing to no longer have a year round option. also has very large class sizes. one teacher in K for 25 kids-not even a teaching assistant to help! how are these kids supposed to learn? Teacher is rated low because she can't possibly give all the kids the attention they need.

The teachers are nice. The principal is very negative and mean to children. She always has a grumpy look on her face and makes you feel unwelcome in the building. Have never dealt with such a negative and micro managing principal before. She is just plain miserable and mean. She needs to be a prison guard not work with children.

I went to Kurtz Elementary when I was a child, my husband did too, and now our daughter Summer goes there. I love the fact that Kurtz is a green school, and it teaches kids how to utilize their resources, and everything that the earth has to offer us. The staff at Kurtz Elementary is excellent, they really are dedicated to their students, and encourage them to reach for their goals, that the sky is the limit. Kurtz kids care, because Kurtz teaches care.

The school is full of very caring teachers who love what they do. They urge the children to be good citizens with their Kudos for Kids program. There is great parent involvement with ongoing fund raising efforts. They also have a wonderful program called 'Kurtz Email Angels' where parents may sign up to receive an email whenever a need arises for any of the students' families. The need could be for anything from food & toiletries to hats & gloves. An email is generated and products are donated. The program is completely anonomous. Those less fortunate are helped, without any embarassment and those who donated get that warm, fuzzy feeling by helping those who need. It is also the location of Huron Valley School district's Year-Round School program. This wonderful program is not commonly available in other school districts. Their MEAP scores are above average too.

Kurtz elementary school has proven itself over and over again to be a wonderful school, with a dedicated staff and a huge amount of parental involvement. The students are wonderful, caring kids, with a real desire to learn. This is largely in part to the wonderful teaching staff, who goes above and beyond their responsibilities to ensure a safe, exciting and caring learning environment. It is a wonderful, diverse school that continues to excell in academic and social areas. I couldn't imagine my children experiencing their formative elementary years at any other school.

Without question, this is the finest elementary school in the district. My children seem to learn, retain and out-perform other students from nieghboting schools. The parent involvement is great and the teachers are very dedicated. The principal knows everyones name and is very involved. I recommend this school highly for anyone seeking a change for the better. The year-round program is exceptional.

Big Al here again,(see MHS and Lakeland reviews) Kurtz... One of the only few bright spots in the HVS districts, Good solid teaching and prepping for middle school, outperforms other district elementaries, but year round program effort by parents and schools to make this work, is the difference, in all fairness it doesn't hurt to have a school made up of die hard parents and proportionately higher gifted students, although there is at trend that I think will produce a self-fulfilling phrophecy that will change student make-up. Parents who think their kids are smarter than other kids, but aren't,so I will put them here. It takes more than that. Also the year round programs at HVS are dwindling and fall short because it does not continue through all grade levels.

Kurtz Elementary houses an optional program called 'year round school'. Kids attend the same number of days as on the traditional calendar, but with breaks interspersed in the year. The kids have one month off in the summer instead of two, and benefit from learning throughout the year. It's a great school and I'd recommend it to anyone.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
