We moved to New Lothrop this year. AT the start of the year we were excited about our son attending this school. Unfortunately very quickly we felt like we did not belong. Often we felt uncomfortable around staff and were looked by staff when someone they knew was in the office. Our child was left at school and they were unsure why he did not make it on the bus, mind you he was only 6. We were very unhappy with this school and their policies. We switched to Flushing schools mid semester and could not be happier.
We moved to New Lothrop almost six years ago. New Lothrop thrives with sports, field trips, etc., where other schools have almost eliminated everything. I work a lot and a single mother. I am not in any clicks..., just nice to everyone. My kids didn't have any trouble making friends or blending in. Sports are a little competitive, but it's not about winning, but playing your best and giving it your all. I have seen and dealt with other schools...this one's awesome. Great education, no crime, and everyone tries hard to make it great.
It is a great small community school. IF you are from NL, or choose to enter the tiny circle which is made up of the support staff and principal. The Principal is one to "blow smoke" and tell you ANYTHING to pacify you. Then when you leave...he forgets all about your issue. He is a good curriculum director, good w/ the students. But, does not follow through on ANYTHING unless it is to his benefit. The support staff covers for each other when something goes wrong. And, if you have a issue you need to bring to the attention of Principal of Super EVERYONE will eventually know about it. It's the way it is in small towns. If you can deal w/ all the drama your child will definately get a good education here. Great college prep, if you can survive it!
It's a top notch school with exceptional teachers and administrators in a small, safe environment.
I find the academic standards at New Lothrop to be similar to the standards of other above average districts. Teachers, principals and office staff have been courteous. Although my children are new to the district they found friends. Small districts like this have fewer teams, clubs, and honors classes, but the flip side is students are more likely to have play time on a team, to be an officer in a club, and to shine as individuals. A unique practice in this district is that elementary students have 45 minutes set aside for religion on two days a week. Students who are enrolled in religion class by their parents leave the building for this and students who are not enrolled stay in their classrooms. Class activities and field trips sometimes reflect a presumption that the students are Christian.
High academic standards bordering on the too high! Teachers are very bossy even to parents. Most parents act like they are in school themselves and clique up. This makes it hard for an 'outsiders' kids to fit in. Overall I would say it is a good school for kids academically. But if you are not in the circle of a select few socially, your kids will be miserable!
