My granddaughter started Kindergarten in the fall of 2013. I was reserving my opinion (rating) until she had been there a few years. I have volunteered on a couple of occasions and taken her to many school functions/activities. I couldn't be more pleased with her attitude and the progress she has made. She is excited to go to school, happy to learn and willingly does her homework. She loves her teacher and her classmates and is so unhappy when she has to stay home for some illness. She always has some learning experience, wonderful stories, interesting facts or a cool science experiment to share with us on family night. What better reflection on her teachers and all the staff who very obviously strive to make learning such a positive experience. Paint Creek Elementary is an outstanding example of what education should be about.

Overall, Paint Creek is a good school, but could be better. I do not support the "job sharing" concept employed by the school in that there often seems to be a lack of accountablity between the teachers to students and parents. While the district probably saves some money in benefits paid out to the teachers, the student is the one who suffers. Also, after complaining to the principal that my child's grades were not updated on the Powerschool application, I was told that this was a "privilege" that the parents had to monitor test scores, but that the teachers were not required to post grades in a timely manner. Why have it then????

Lake Orion public schools have not lived up to their excellent scores. The director of special education NEVER does what she says she will do. She repeatedly goes back on her word and does not seem to care at all about the students welfare. Do not move to this district unless you really like to fight and have lots of money to spend on an attorney...you're going to need it!!

The school district goes above and beyond the call of duty to make sure each child feels special and excells in school. Their special ed department is awesome and they really listen to parent input.

My children attended Paint Creek through 2nd and 5th grades respectively. They both loved going to school there. Paint Creek does an excellent job meeting high academic standards with a top-notch staff and while maintaining a nurturing environment.

About the tests

In 2013-2014 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. Currently, GreatSchools' ratings reflect 2013 MEAP results; ratings will be updated after 2014 Michigan Merit Examination (MME) results are released. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. In addition, they have recalculated past years' results using these new standards for proficiency, making the above year-over-year results comparable.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
