My three children spent the 2008-2009 school year here while I was working at my new job. Principal is not very accessible and comes across as very unfriendly. He has problems handling a small handful of disruptive students in the 4th and 5th grade. Teachers are nice but do not give much extra effort. Most have a lot of experience but appear to be waiting for retirement. I felt my children did not receive the extra help they needed or I requested during conferences. Overall, this school years was a big disappointment.

They push Algebra in 6th grade even though some children are still struggling to learn basic math. Leave the Algebra for Jr High/High School level. The teachers don't check the childs writing papers for proper grammar, spelling, etc, things that were very important when I attended elementary school. When my child is absent from school and I forget to call her in sick, it seems like the school never calls to tell me that my child is absent. In these days of children being picked up by strangers, I'd appreciate a call a lot sooner from the school telling me that my child is absent.

This School is Fantastic! The curriculum is great. I would suggest more supervision on the playgrounds but other than that well done Washington.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
