Having gone through the Pellston schools from grades 2 through 12, I've had a lot of experience with how the school works. Also, I've worked in many schools in Michigan and in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, so I know what other schools are like as well. In comparison to other schools, Pellston is a great school with very helpful and caring teachers. It is true that the extra curricular activities have dropped off over the years, but that's due mainly to lack of interest by students and lack of funds. As far as academics go, it is a very good school to attend. It also gives you relatively small class sizes and a small student body, which means way fewer problems among students from gangs, cliques, etc. If you want your kid(s) to receive a good education without the pressures large schools create, you won't find much better.
I am a Pellston graduate and I loved my entire experience there. Of course there are areas for improvement but you'll get that at any school. I've heard complaints that the only things offered are band and sports, but that is because of a lack of student participation. Even those activities are suffering due to low numbers. There is really great community involvement and support, I could not imagine growing up in a different environment.
I am a former student. Activites besides athletics and band is scarce. It is a small school, though as alot of big problems. Parent involvement is good.
I believe that the overall quality of our school is on par or above the average of other schools in our area and the School Board and Superintendent have done a remarkable job of maintaining full curriculum and sports activities while other area schools have had to cut programs. Maybe those who complain should be more pro-active and participate. There are always more critics than doers.
I graduated from a school much bigger down state and moving north, having children that have attended Pellston Schools for the entire school careers I find Pellston Schools to be very good. The new Center point program that was installed for parents to be more interactive with thier childs education is wonderful. I also think the superintendant has done a superb job with the budget. Look at a lot of other schools in our area that are falling apart. I totally agree that there is No Parent participation. Parants are more then happy to have extra cirrecula activiteis so they have some place to drop off thier children. I have gone to just about every football game for 20 years and the only time you see most of those parents are on parents night. Every teacher I have dealt with has been very receptive to helping students learn.
This school has an awesome problem with bullying and. The teachers and administration seems to have no care about anything but teaching the classes they need. If you are looking for any extra-curriicular activiy besides sports, you are out of luck here. the one good thing is the size. I will not send any of my kids here! Parent involvement is moderate.
I am a former graduate of Pellston High School. Overall, the school is amazing. The teachers are knowlegable in their subject areas, caring and take a genuine interest in the students. Due to budeget cuts, the academic programs have taken a hard hit. Although Pellston may not offer a wide range of classes, the classes offered are good. In all honesty, the only area that the school is lacking in is the administration and the School Board. The principal is un-caring and un-sympathetic towards students' needs and the academics in the school. The School Board is concerned more with the athletics of the school than the academic well being of the students. Lucky for the current and future students of Pellston High School, the teachers and counselors are concerned and make it a point to help the students achieve all that they can.
I'm a former graduate of pellston highschool from 2002 i'm currently serving my second combat tour in iraq. i stumbled on this web site accidently and i wanted to put my input in. i never took school to seriously even though i should have and i'm sure the teachers could have shown me alot more then i wanted at that time.i appreciate all the teachers and staff because they try their hardest to show you what you need to know. it's not the teachers who are doing a bad job it's the lack of interest that alot of students have. alot of them take school as a joke like i did.The teachers are excellent.at the time i might have voted otherwise. i look back and i see that the teachers were always there to help me when i needed it. I will take my kids to pellston in the future.
I currently have my second child attending pellston high school. There are some great teachers. My opinion of the problems in this school is the lack of parent involvement in their children's lives! my children have done well, and have had great support from their teachers. When I hear a compaint about this school, it is almost always from a parent who not only expects the teachers to teach their child academics, but to raise them as well.
The principle or Pellston High Schools is a horrible principle, not sympathetic at all. Alot of the teachers are nice, but the school all together has horrible standards and does not care about your needs at all. Do not go to this school.
