The principal is not forthcoming regarding information explaining school policies. My child's teacher has spent the year attempting to dissuade me from teaching him things he has asked to learn because I might be 'pushing too hard'. The playground staff is inattentive and pays little attention to scraps and bullying. And the PTO are unkind to one another behind each others backs. Altogether not the best school in Portage, by any means.

As a parent whose child was assigned to Central Elementary after Waylee's closing, I have some observations regarding Central that are unflattering. There seems to be a different 'feel' and culture here than at the other Portage schools. My child's teacher is 'adequate' but I cannot say that she is inspired. The children seem to spend an inordinate amount of time being entertained by television in the classroom. My child's teacher is a very nice woman, and she keeps the kids working to the lesson plan, but: There isn't enough advancement that I can see is useful, and: she doesn't seem to have taken the time to really know each child the way my kid's other teachers have. I hear similar complaints from other parents. And although the school has some strict policies regarding behavior, they seem to be enforcing them in a rather haphazard manner. Portage has better schools.

We love this school! The principle, Mrs. Roberts, is the best! Great communication with teachers and wonderful teamwork with a multi-faceted system if your child needs extra help.

We loved Central Elementary. We thought the principal and teachers were great and showed genuine concern for students. My son went there for kindergarten and most of first grade. We miss it because now we are stuck in horrible California schools.
