I have been a Cornerstone/WPA parent since 2006 and 4 of my children have attended this school. Sad to say that my children WILL NOT be returning in the Fall of 2015. I have witnessed a dramatic change in the atmosphere of the school from excellent (Cornerstone/Private) to just terrible. During the time this school shifted to Charter, I was willing to stay and stick it out but now I wish I had transferred my kids to the Nevada Campus. A lot of the children are wild, rude, and unruly. There have been so many changes to the staff-Every time I turn around there is a new teacher-some have only stayed 1 year for whatever reason. Security Guards being fired left and right. Every morning I come in, there is someone different at the desk. You get to know who's protecting your children and when you enter the school and that person is no longer there, you're just like well who is this now?? The parking lot is horrible! In the a.m. AND p.m. Rude parents, Loud and Vulgar music blasting. I've witnessed verbal incidents in the parking lot during drop off. The climate has totally changed and I'm just not feeling this school at all. If you were a Cornerstone parent prior-then you understand where I'm coming from. A lot of the teachers are great (the ones that have stayed) as well as Mr. Cairo (who's leaving) and Mr. Dean but the atmosphere is too out of control for my taste. I'm transferring my kids over to the Nevada Campus where the environment is a bit more nurturing and sane.

I think that some of the teachers need to learn how to work under pressure. What I mean by that is, sometimes the teachers show their students that they are frustrated. I sat in one day to see how the class act because the teacher sent out an email stating the students were having behavior problems. The teacher did not have any control of her class at all. My child does not have behavior problems so it will be hard for her to excel if her class is not under control. I do like the school academics and I can see that my child is exceeding. The school is bad with communicating things in a timely matter. Everyone is not able to provide the things that their child may need as soon as the information is provided. Overall, I do think this is a good school. I have not been in a situation when I addressed something and it was not resolved. The staff is friendly. The principal and dean are awesome! My child will continue to attend this school until she enters High School. I also like that there is a lot of activities for the students to participate in.

I have two sons 4th & 8th graders that have been attending Washington Parks Academy (WPA) for 4 years now. This is the best school environment that I have encountered during my kids school years. There are several things that I love about WPA which are as follows: 1) The principal is very consistent and reliable. I buy into his vision for the school and I proudly support Mr. Cairo. 2) The next thing is the parent involvement. During various school events throughout the school year you can barely find a parking space on school grounds because of the turnout from parents being involved in there children education. 3) The staff, during the 4 years that my kids have attended WPA each and every staff person has been devoted to the academic success of my two boys. The staff are caring and considerate as well as tough (academically) on the students and have high expectations for the students success. 4) Finally, the social and athletic aspects of the school. WPA offer a wide variety of out of school activities.

When you think family you think Washington- Parks. The principal, dean, teachers and staff are not only there for your child but they are there for the parents so they can help the child. The people there will love on your child as though they was there own. My son graduated from there and now my daughters attends, so if you want your child to excel with all diligence while getting the nurtured bring them to Washington- Parks.

WPA is an excellent school! The teachers truly care about the students and work hard to push each student to their highest academic potential. I have been impressed with how much academic growth I have seen in my children each year. The teachers do an amazing job of creating daily lessons that meet the needs of each individual student. I appreciate the focus that is put on various character traits each month and the great example of these traits that the teachers exhibit every day. If you are looking for an excellent school with high academic standards, a strong moral focus, caring teachers, and a family atmosphere, this is the place to be.

Washington-Parks Academy is absolutely awesome! My child is becoming so well rounded and I credit that partially to his school and teachers. Many activities are offered to the students which is a plus because it keeps the students involved. I love the choice I made when choosing Washington-Parks as the school for my child.

I have been working here since 2006, and it has been a wonderful experience. Since going charter we have had access to much more technology. Our school currently houses three computer labs equipped to handle up to four classes, interactive white boards in each classroom, tablets, blended learning, and other support programs. We, like other schools in our state, have had to adjust to the continuous changes in the educational testing due to Common Core. We are improving each year on our tests and will continue to do so. I am pleased that we have parents, students, and staff all working to better the Detroit community.

I am a very involved parent at my three children school they all range from the age 6-13. This school started out to be superb in the commitment level from the parents, teachers and staff. Over the years this school performance began to decrease dramatically. As a parent I want the best education and care for my children, this school hasn't providing that care or concern for the students education in a long time. I believe leadership starts from the head and if that person in charge isn't concern about their students growth no one else will feel obligated to do anything more.I have held in there for as long as I could, my children will not be returning. I suggest for all parents to do their own research, what didn't work for me may work for you.

my child has been with wpa going into the 4 years. Originally it was a great school, 1st and 2nd grade. In the third grade there were challenges with the new teachers, but we made it through all A's. Now this fourth year has been a day mare. I am a very involved parent with great concerns about education and the way it is presented. There is no way a child would go from an A to D in six weeks; D's are unexceptable, especially when you have (2) parents daily helping with homework and setting a pace for learning advancements. My family and many others are working on excellence and Ms. Bartell is not on the same page. She think failure is excepted in a community of predominantly all Afro-Americans. Teacher who fail child in elementary, in most case are failures who need company. They don't care, they are just there to collect a check which may not be much, but the children still deserve a decent education. If, i was to grade Mrs. Bartell she would receive an F, for class control, organizational skill and her interactive parent skills are HORRIBLE. It is teachers like her who make schools look bad.

WPA as it is affectionately known is a good public school academy trying to uphold the traditions of its predecessor history in the private sector. It is difficult at times due to restrictions by state mandates. Academic standards have not been compromised but can be challenging enforcing with the new clientele. We still strive for excellence but we must remember that it takes a village to raise a child and we are doing that one child at a time by diligently striving to attract competent teachers and support staff. They have implemented various programs to bolster classroom learning and the children have taken to those programs eagerly, i.e. Blended learning labs, Debate team, Academic Games team and a Garden Club. All these programs along with the new technology added to the curriculum has helped improve the academic achievement of all our students. All schools have issues. We just have to be willing to be involved by bringing solutions.

Washington-parks helps my daughter to believe that with the quality education she be anything she dreams to be! However the communication of concerns and issues between the school and parents needs improvement.

I have been apart of the Cornerstone/Washington Parks "family" for five years. My son has been there since kindergarten and is now in the 4th grade. Before the school went charter, it was GREAT! We had the best teachers; a challenging academic program; and an orderly learning environment. Unfortunately, I have watched the steady decline of the school. It's very sad and disturbing. We have lost great teachers and the best Dean of Students (Mr. Fike). The school once strived for excellence in everything and expected excellence from the children. Now, the school only strives to meet state standards and celebrates mediocrity. This institution has lost a number of good families because their children were not receiving the "Cornerstone" education that we all have grown to expect. When the school went from private to charter, the parents were promised that the academic program would not change. This promise has not been kept. After this year, the school will (again) lose a number of families that have been with them a long time because parents are just fed up. I will say that they do a good job with grades K-2. Any grade past the second is questionable.

This school is the best thing that ever happen to organized education. Sometimes I think the teachers give too much homework but I do see the results of it. Good Job

I could not asked for a better place for my son to begin his education. My son is a pre-k student and has grown by leaps and bounds over this past year. He is completing homework that my neighbor's 1st grader is doing. At 4 my son can spell and read 4 and 5 letter words, do basic addition/ subtraction, spell his first and last name and so much more. If you are a "lazy" parent this school is not for you, but if are excited about helping your child to be the best, U WILL LOVE IT! I will admit that at first the 3-4 pages of hw each night, weekly spelling and bible verse test, book reports and projects were a bit overwhelming...but after seeing how quickly my son was progressing I could do nothing but support his teacher. She emails, text messages and sends weekly notes home to keep parents informed and involved...I love that. I could not be happier with my choice to have my son attend Cornerstone's Washingto Parks Academy.

This review is more directed towards the Cornerstone Pre-K division of the school. From my experience the administration has no idea of the processes or procedures for Cornerstone. Everything is very disorganized and many of the teachers that I have seen in the location of my child's classroom do not talk to the children with respect. In fact they do not talk at all, everything is a yell or a threat of punishment. The teachers have no control and the children run around the halls often unsupervised and with little direction. I will not be continuing my child's education here.
