Gearing is a terrific school. They do alot to engage the children in the community and with each other. The teachers genuinely care about the kids, but there are a few teachers who could communicate more effectively with parents. Academically my daughters' progress has been fantastic. The principal encourages the students to be respectful and take responsibility for their actions. There is an emphasis on teaching the chidren to be organized. Every month there seems to be an activity for the family. My only complaint is few oppportunities for working parents to be involved.

Gearing is a great school; however the teachers need to communicate with parents more. They want parental support, yet they don't always keep us informed. On several occassion, I found out about a problem when it was too late to do anything about it. That is very frustrating. I would like to see a better handwriting program and have handwriting taught. My sons handwriting is terrible and I blame the schools lack of instruction.

I am overall very pleased with Gearing. The teachers genuinely care about each student they have. As far as the rating of this school, my children do fantastic academically. Even though our Principal does run a tight show, she could be a little more connected with parents and students and even teachers. She isn't seen very much. I do love her take on being responsible and being respectful! Gearing is a good school and deserves recognition for it. It is the teachers that make it that way!

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
