TC West has wonderful adult leadership in the principals, guidance counselors AND the secretaries of each area of the school. The athletics are phenomenal, and the music program is unmatched in the state. Having a high school the size of West take on a difficult just-released Broadway show like Phantom of the Opera with nine roles being doubled on alternating nights - and having sellout performances, one after another, speaks for itself. The leadership of this school is just outstanding. They set the bar high for their students and then lead them, encourage them and model for them how to reach their goals.

As a recent alumni of West, I was impressed with this school. The principals know what they are doing, there are teachers that want you to succeed. There also have a huge variety of extra-curricular activities. This school has just under 2,000 students so there is lots of people to talk to! Highly recommend this school to parents.

I have one daughter that has graduated and another still at West. It is an amazing school.Great teachers and staff. From the AP programs to music, sports and daily care of students, it is for sure our #1 choice. The number of choices at the school is great as well.

The quality of the academic programs are great. There is a good varity of opitions for subjects, as well as honors and AP courses. The quality of the music program is excellent. There is a great varity of sports that are offered for both boys and girls. Parents are involved in school and take part in helping with many projects.

Traverse City West H.S. is a good public school. For students who wish to make the most of their education, it has resources and opportunities in sufficient quality and quantity.

While there are some fine teachers at West, I cannot recommend this school. The present principal, Joseph Tibaldi is a very poor administrator. He has demonstrated himself to be exclusively concerned with his image as principal at the cost of fair treatment for the students. He plays favorites- primarily towards the athletes- and he seems to need, constantly, to prove he's in charge. In addition to Mr, Tibaldi, the teaching in general is not first class. A lot of school time is wasted and the lessons presented do not inspire a love of learning in the students.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Michigan used the Michigan Merit Examination (MME) to assess students in grade 11 in reading, writing, math, science and social studies. The MME is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the state standard.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MME test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
