All 3 of my children are at Nellie Reed (1st, 3rd. and 5th grades). This is an excellent school with high academic and behavioral standards. The staff are caring and actively encourage parental involvement. The current Principal is exceptional in every way. The staff are a credit to their profession.
I have found that the staff at Nellie Reed Elementary have made me feel like part of a family working toward our childrens' education and well being. The staff and students are a pleasure to be around,
I grew up in Vernon, and have graduated from Corunna Schools, so logically I wanted my kids to attend Nellie Reed. My oldest child (now a freshman in highscool) enjoyed going to Nellie Reed during the best years of NR. However my youngest child does not know the warm family feeling that used to distinguish NR from the rest of the neighbouring schools. My youngest child has been at NR for 3 years and has had a different principal each year. The warm, friendly newsletters and the welcoming principal who used to know all students by name and welcome them to school each morning with high 5's is a thing of the past. This year they have a former High school teacher/track coach as the principal. Every newsletter now includes more restriction on parents involvement and doesn't include any photos of the kids at school. It is very sad.
I have been a Nellie Reed parent for 7 years now and cannot imagine being any where else. The staff-teachers, admin, kitchen and janitorial-go out of their way to help the kids feel at ease. Both of my daughters cry at the end of the year because they don't want to leave. This is my sons first year actually attending NR, even though he has spent his whole life at the school due to his sisters he was scared when school started, everyone did everything they could to help him feel at ease. The school feels more like a big family to me. Staff and students are concerned about each other and their community. The idea of having to leave next year brings tears to my eyes. My children and I love this school.
At first I really liked Nellie Reed, however after my son was in 1st grade for almost half the school year I began to notice he was not doing 1st grade work. Apparently, there were so many students that should have been in pre-first but were pushed forward into 1st grade. The teacher had no choice but to hold the class back to accomodate the slower students. I pulled my son out and put him in a private school. He learning so much more.
My children are school of choice students and we have enjoyed Nellie Reed Elementary for the last four years. This school has top notch leadership and teacher quality. I'm thankful everyday that we made the choice to become part of this school district.
I am very proud to say my son has attended Nellie Reed for 4 years now and has one after another outstanding teachers! The Principal stands at the entrance evey morning and afternoon to greet and send off each child, knowing what seems to be each childs name. The children get to start each day with a warm smile and a personal greeting. I don't ever remember my schools taking that kind of a interest in me or my classmates. Signed, A very happy parent!
