I love Sunset Lake Elementary! The teachers here are phenomenal, they really care about the kids at the school and they care about the community too. The principal is very involved at the school and comes out to visit and socialize with the students before and after school. I also see the principle, as well as, many teachers participating in many school fundraisers. The school has initiated many health and fitness programs this year at the school to help encourage a healthy lifestyle for the students. One of them is the mile club, the students meet once a week during recess and walk or jog a mile around the soccer fields. Once the students have accomplished a mile, they earn 'dog tags' that can be worn on a necklace. They also have a great reading program, where the students earn points for each read book and then tested on to gage reading comprehension. As the students earn points they receive rewards in the form of prizes and even group field trips. One of the best programs that Sunset Lake has launched is called Generous Hands,Inc. This is a backpack program that sends nutritious food home with kids on fridays, so that the child has some nurtritous food over the weekend. This program was started due to numerous kids going hungry, especially over the weekend when they didn't have access to school meals. More information on this program can be viewed at www.generoushands.org I love Sunset Lake Elementary! The teachers there are everything you hope a teacher to be!

About the tests

In 2013-2014 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. Currently, GreatSchools' ratings reflect 2013 MEAP results; ratings will be updated after 2014 Michigan Merit Examination (MME) results are released. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. In addition, they have recalculated past years' results using these new standards for proficiency, making the above year-over-year results comparable.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
