Ogemaw Heights High School, through the eyes of a recent graduate of the establishment, is not my first school of choice. Although I learned a lot from my time as a student, the learning atmosphere was very relaxed and non-demanding. I was not challenged enough in my studies, even after taking college level classes. Also, there is not a wide variety of classes to choose from, forcing a senior to take classes in which they did not prefer. I took what I could from my experience at OHHS and looked at the time optimistically, although there were many schools in the surrounding counties which would have better suited my needs.
As a kid who wants to go above and beyond, Ogemaw Heights has not given me my full potential to do so. While there are some teachers that have pushed and inspired me to further myself, majority of the staff focuses on getting the lower end passing while leaving the top students behind. I've had to push and fight to simply get some tougher classes or start up an extracurricular activity. Majority of my classes are ones that I feel are a waste of time and resources are very limited. Athletics can also be focused on a little too much, and favoritism is pretty widespread, but I suppose that can be seen in majority of high schools. While it does have its perks, a student who wants great academic challenges and achievements may not want to make Ogemaw Heights the place to do so.
My son attends Ogemaw Heights High School, and has for 2 years, going on 3. We have alot of very good experiences, both him and me as a parent. We have seen him grow into a very caring, responsible young man because of his positve experiences he has had. Sure there is a teacher or two that we or he did not care much for, but what school is any different. We believe they have opened many doors for him, more that the school he attended before. He picked this school because he wanted to better himself, not just academically but athletically, and he is doing this because of the many caring teachers and coaches here at Ogemaw Heights. Thanks so much for caring! We will always be a fan of the Ogemaw Heights Falcons. Go Falcons!
I think that the school tries as much as they probably can with the budget allotted, but I feel that all of the money in the school is only going to certain places and it's not fair to other students who don't get to partake of the money. It seems like all of the money goes towards athletics. The teachers are getting old and don't exactly care about teaching, only about retirement. If I had the ability to transfer schools at this very moment, I honestly would. It's not an environment that I like to be in, and I guess that's how I feel about Ogemaw Heights.
Ogemaw Heights works hard to be a safe school. While the school excels at some academic areas, others leave a lot to be desired. Some teachers are very helpful, and will work with you individually whenever you need it. However, some get upset when you ask for help or need something explained, assuming you didn't pay attention the first time. Most of the staff at OHHS treat their students with respect until they have reason not to, but a few like to pick favorites and will make your life tough. Extracurricular activities need more diversity. Students at OHHS, as mentioned in another review, are very cliquey, and can be very narrow-minded, but this just reflects the attitudes of the rural community. OHHS does seem to have a high drop out rate after the first year, but this cannot be blamed on the school. Most of the dropouts were not prepared.
This school is a safe environment with great teachers. Many who will combine interesting life stories of educative value into their lessons (i.e. Mr. Boyce, Mr. Hawkins, Mr. Odett, ect.) and happily work with an individual student, one on one. The only problem is a lack of extracurricular activities and minimal parent involvement, except in football. I don't care for the principal; I think he cares more how the school looks as an institution than the welfare of the individual students. However, I may be a bit biased by a few unfortunate incidents in the past. Overall, I believe this school is above average but could do more to better itself.
As a Graduate of Ogemaw Heights, I can say that Ogemaw is a safe school. But could have made more efforts to do more activities to involve the students and the activities they do. They could be more interesting instead of the same stuff every year.New activities should be brought to their attention ( as long as it is safe and you put other peoples feelings into consideration.) Ogemaw students are very 'cliquey'. The teachers are excellent! Most of them are fun and will work one-on-one with the student!
