Being here at White lake Middle School has been an experiance I will never forget, meeting new friends and learning more things like playing the saxaphone with Mrs.Fitzpatrick has been something that has tought me new ways of helping the community around me!Every teacher is nice and gives you a warming welcome and I think all of them are cool in all different ways.Lastly every teacher knows that everyone has a different purpose and we all have a say.

Choosing to have our child attend White Lake Middle was the absolute decision we ever made. The quality of academics is top notch, but more than this is the fantasic emotional atmosphere that Mr. Gmelin, the principle, and Mrs. McDonald, vice principle, create within the school. Bullying is not tolerated, efforts are made for every child to feel safe and comforable. Issues are addressed before they can become problems. They have, in addition to all the regular sports, they always have 2-3 intermurals going on after school. There are also quite a few teachers that have been here 15 or more years. It is an awesome school! I am so pleased with WLMS, and I am proud to say we choose it.

I agree with the October, 2004 review. I think the principal, Paul Gmelin is awesome, caring and extremely fair. Although I have not been overly impressed with many teachers at the school, I believe there are some outstanding teachers, such as Mr. Francis, Ms. Scofield and Dr. Peters, to name a few. These teachers, as well as Mr. Gmelin and Mr. MacGregor, have made White Lake Middle School a positive experience for my children. I have found that when you have to deal with the teachers that are not very good or fair or if there are other issues, Mr. Gmelin is always available. He is extremely fair and because he obviously cares about the students, he works hard to do what is right and he deals directly with his staff to ensure that they do the same. He doesn't ignore problems, he fixes them! He makes the school good!

The principal at White Lake Middle is very fair and just. He is an ideal principal for middle school and tries to see every side of the situation before determining his decision. He gives the students the respect they need and in these days that is very rare. I commend him for this. I wish that I could say the same for the staff, but it is sadly not so. Some of the teachers need to take a class themselves to remember what it feels like to be treated like a criminal. On the other hand, a handful of teachers there are extremely good.

About the tests

In 2013-2014 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. Currently, GreatSchools' ratings reflect 2013 MEAP results; ratings will be updated after 2014 Michigan Merit Examination (MME) results are released. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. In addition, they have recalculated past years' results using these new standards for proficiency, making the above year-over-year results comparable.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
