Staff is so nice and helpful. I like the school because of so many reasons.
Our son attended South Arbor for kindergarten, but we are in process of moving to another state. We would have no hesitation about continuing at South Arbor if were staying in Michigan. The things we like most about South Arbor: 1) There is a sense of community and shared responsibility for educational and social outcomes. 2) Staff throughout the building are committed and resourceful. 3) Older children tend to look after younger children, in contrast to behavior we sometimes encounter on local playgrounds. 4) Academic progress is obviously a priority. 5) I was skeptical of the school's moral focus, but have been impressed with the ideals that our son has taken to heart. 6) Parent involvement is encouraged and welcomed. 7) The student body is racially and culturally diverse. Our son has grown tremendously, both socially and academically over the past year. He likes going to school (and he was not a fan of preschool) and has come to believe that his education is important. I wish I had a complaint to make my review more plausible, but I h honestly don't. South Arbor is better than winning the lottery.
This school is outstanding! The academics are clearly the best in Washtenaw County, and it has shown in MEAP scores every year. MAP scores are excellent as well, often scoring above the 90th percentile nationally. The school has involved parents as well. All of this combined makes for high standards for academics, athletics, band, orchestra, athletics, and art. I highly recommend the school!
This last review is ridiculous. This school is challenging and the teachers are very clear and make it easy to learn. Students don't fall asleep and if they do, it's not from boredom but from being sleep deprived. Students are very intelligent. Even ones in standard and basic. Map scores are amazing. And if you are complaing about South Arbor's grades, you should take a look at other local schools. South Arbor is great and teachers are yes, talented.
It is interesting to read all the reviews. My boy is in the proficient classroom, and they are challenged to try their best. Some parent was saying 'they only move students up if it is an 'extreme situation.''. This is not true. In a given grade, all the students in all 3 classes take the same test once a year in Spring and the school rearrange the 'proficient, standard, basic' classroom base on the testing scores. If you child get higher score then the ones in proficient classroom, he/she will get moved up automatically. This is the standard process and it happens every single year, not just an 'extreme situation'. Number don't lie.
It is believed that South Arbor is a school full of incredibly intelligent students and incredibly educational teachers, that is false. There are ocasionally talented teachers, but mostly the instructors are pedagogues who only like the attention of a room. While the teachers are lecturing, the students are falling asleep from boredom because they already know the process or the teacher does not explain it clearly yet still gives assignments on the topic. Some students may be intelligent, but mostly the basic and standard classes are overflowing and the proficient students are receiving lower, and lower grades. I had to remove my child for academic reason because she was not being challenged as they only move students up if it is an 'extreme situation.' I would not recomend this school. Try Canton.
Apart from the pick up/drop off routine, there really isn't much not to love about South Arbor Charter Academy. As a parent of two special-needs children, I've been consistently impressed with the school's eagerness to help them develop to the best of their ability. Regular parent involvement is encouraged -- and yet, it is the staff (particularly Principal DiLaura and Vice Principle Hudson) who really deserve a great deal of the credit with their dedicated example. Instead of hiding in their offices, they are out at the curb every day, greeting students and modeling the respect and orderly living they try to emulate in the students. To the parent who was disappointed in the number of novels the students were required to read, I can only say that any parent who wanted to start a book club would undoubtedly be welcomed with open arms!
My child started off in another school district that did not think that children should be challenged at all. I was absolutely thrilled when we got the news that she could start at South Arbor. She has grown by leaps and bounds after moving to a school that sets high expectations for student learning and holds them accountable for it. She is working two years above her grade level. Even better, she loves the school!
ok i go to south arbor and i must say it is pretty cool. someone said that overweight kids are teased, but i can honestly say that is false. at south arbor, we are taught from a start that we should not judge people by how they look. i also have no idea what the person was talking about when they said that the values statement says it is immoral to over eat. NOBODY and I repeat, NOBODY EVER said that to us. NOBODY taught us that 'value statement' and NONE OF US STUDENTS FOLLOW IT IF THERE IS ONE. Overall, i can say that south arbor has done great with teaching me stuff. I came from the ypsi public school district, and i was lacking behind. With some tutoring, I was able to overcome difficulties. Now I am EXTREMELY glad I ever went to south arbor!
My daughter recently join the south arbor team. I love this school. I like the supportive staff and parents. My daughter came from a falling school district and I was unsure if she would be able to keep up with the other children at south arbor. The teachers took her by the hand and gave her the support she needed to feel confident at her new school. I would reccommend south arbor to all parents who believe their kids should have the best quality education.
In their core values statement it is immoral to over eat . This has reinforced teasing of over weight children in this school. I am impressed with the safety of school but, the principal leaves something to be desired. Did you know that even if I rate this as you do it is a wast of time. The ratings are based on test scores not what we rate the school.
You simply could not ask for a better school than South Arbor Charter Academy. It has provided my children with a safe and nurturing environment that seeks to partner with parents to give children the best possible education. I have two children who have since graduated from South Arbor who are now excelling in every aspect at their public high school. They are true leaders academically, socially and with their extracurricular and sports activities. We attribute this success to the partnership we formed with South Arbor many years ago. Thank you South Arbor!
This school works diligently to meet each child's needs, address concerns in a fair and consistent way and is just a phenomenal place to be! South Arbor exceeds my expectations for what a great education should be. The commitment from the staff and the genuine concern each teacher demonstrates is a blessing to children!
I have found south arbor to be a great blessing for my family! there is a strong focus on learning and character deveolpment which I feel is very important! teachers and staff are willing to work with any concerns you have. what more could you ask for. thanks south arbor! I pray it continues
I found S.A. to be highly disappointing. In his fifth grade year, my son did not read a single novel with his class (although the curriculum promised several). The administration has completely segregated children based upon test scores. Testing is one of the primary activities at the school. While the teachers are kind, their hands are tied to provide an excellent education because they are so limited by meaningless demands. I would not send another child to the school. One of his teachers said, 'since 'No Child Gets Left Behind,' no child gets ahead.'
When I received an NHA mailer, the content made me cry. It was exactly what I had been hoping for! South Arbor Academy had turned out to be the finest of the National Heritage Academies. It has been our privilege to have three of our five children attend. We are challenged to find a school that can even come close for our graduating 8th graders. Thank you so much for your commitment to excellence and achievement. You have blessed us!
This has been a wonderful transition for my sons! It is a great consistent caring atmosphere! They actually truly put the students and parents and staff needs together as a whole! The math program is very encouraging(A+). We have not been there long but I have seen a total transformation and School outlook encouraged in my sons! They are both excited about school! They feel respected and so in turn I feel they act more responsible! I can not say enough about the consistency as well! This all comes together with an excellent academic program!! Go Knights!
Last year was my first year at SA and I was impressed. The quarterly testing helped my 5th grd child set academic goals and achieve them. My daughter transferred here being one grade behind in reading and now is right on target. Getting all A's one quarter. Classroom management was awesome allowing more learning time. The parent involvement is incredible b/c of the environment, respect is well regarded and enforced. The fact that it is diverse I believe is a plus. The school offers music, art and language to the younger students. The school's moral focus will help build your child's character. There is no perfect school, so know that you will encounter some issues that will need to be address, but as long as you are involved and make yourself available your child will succeed here. oh yeah drop off and pick up is less than desirable carpooling is encouraged.
I used to go to south arbor schools. It is a great school, and I wish I still went there, instead of the public school I curently go to. The teachers work with you and morals are taught. I give this school 100%!
