Hello my son is in the 6th grade and this week has been hell for him. He was diagnosed with OCD in the 4th grade and had severe separation anxiety then. He eventually got thru it and was totally fine up until this week. Sixth grade has been a breeze up until now. He made the honor roll and was making A's and B's. We got him a watch this weekend as a gift for his great accomplishment. He has a cell phone that he takes with him everyday at school in case of an emergency. He has been using that all this week, sneaking in the bathroom and crying hysterical for me to come pick him up. I have spoke with the school counselor and she suggested that he gets more professional help. So yesterday we spoke with a therapist. Most of the time was spent filling out paperwork which is expected the first day. I know that in order for him to really get the benefit from speaking with the therapist it is going to take some time. My question is what do I do in the meantime? I have asked him about bullying etc. and he said that there are no bullies that picks on him and that there are no teachers giving him a hard time. He got a scratch on his watch on Monday which started the whole thing. So on Tuesday we got him another watch. He said it is not the watch that is bothering him now, it is that he keeps thinking about the past few days and he keeps begging me to pick him up. It is only the second period right now and he has called saying that he threw up in the bathroom, he said that he promises he will get all of his homework and do it at home if I will just come get him. I have already picked him up two times this week and I have learned that that is not going to help him in the long run get through this time. I know that the school rules is that he is not allowed to have a cell phone, but how can I take that away from him now when he is feeling like this? I feel that if I take that away from him he will feel so alone and it may make it worse for him to get through the day. Is there any advice anyone can give? His next meeting with the therapist is on Monday. We have already called her today and she did not answer, as I am sure she is busy and I do not expect her to come jumping every time I call. Thank you in advance to anyone with advice.
Has your child had a strep infection? My daughter had similar OCD and anxiety symptoms that came on overnight after a mild strep infection. She is now cured after receiving IVIG treatment by a neurologist. You might want to go to the NIH website and search PANDAS OCD symptoms. I first googled strep and anxiety when I learned my kid had PANDAS OCD. After a year from hell, she has her life back. Strep infected the basal ganglia area of the brain causing OCD, vomiting phobia, diminished math and writing skills, anxiety, and other symptoms. PANDAS is pediatric autoimmune Neuropychiatric disorder associated with strep. 79125
I'm not sure if you have as much time as I do to be at my son's side every time he calls but the only thing I could think of doing when my son started to do the same thing your son is doing (or feeling) was I started to volunteer at his school so he knew I was there and when there was no need for me I just sat by the office and read... knowing I was right there gave him peace of mind and within the first week he began responding. I made a point of having lunch with him ... I would sign him out during recess and back at the end of it and we would sit outside in the car and have a picnic... knowing I was there made all the difference... Good Luck dear mom... PS my son is now in high school is doing fantastic, He still calls me from school but now is to ask me to pick him up later... 69071
Dear: The same thing happened to my son when he was in 4th grade and after 3 weeks of wetting the bed and asking me to move him to other school.... i remember telling him i was the only one that could help him and that i would never allowed anyone to hurt him, but i need it to know the truth that is whe he told me he was being bully but the worst part for him he was also told that if he said anything his mother and grandma will die......no wonder he didnt want to be away from me! of course i went to school i cryed to the principal and i didnt move from the office until I saw the other child's parents show up, that was 4 years ago and i still get emotional. good luck sweetie!!!66968
REPLY FROM CARRIE CONTINUED Also...once you find out who it is. FILE CHARGES!! There are laws against kids bullying another child. If you have spoken to the principal & nothing is being done...file complaints from the local school board to the state board. If necesary put pressure on them by having a news crew cover it if possible. Schools don't like being in the spotlight. Be prepared to change schools. 66960
Mystic...Most kids will not tell you if they are being bullied out of fear. because even if the bully is caught, his friends will defend him and take up where he left off. My child went through the same thing this yr. What you need to do is each time he calls you is keep a written log on it. Chances are he is calling you around the same time...either right before a certain class or after it. If it is happening during the between the classes time frame...check to see if your school has cameras. I also obtained a school pass in order to observe my child without her knowlegde and was able to determine she was being bullied, by whome and when. Since the school refused to do anything about it (because the kids daddy had money) my child is now enrolled at a different school and a lot happier. 66959
