Have you asked the school's band director what they recommend? In my area, some music stores rent instruments on a semesterly basis, or sell used equipment. You might even consider ebay....

I'm assuming you mean an INexpensive clarinet? Wait until she starts school. Many schools, including my daughters Jr. High have an inexpensive company that the band goes through and prefers parents go through(they support the publc school bands). My daughter has also been tested and accepted into band to play clarinet. I have a feeling our homes are going to sound like we have sick birds flying around for quite some time.

I did mean an inexpensive clarinet, except I made a mistake in my typing and didn't realize it until I posted it. We already checked with the businesses that have instruments that you can rent to own, but they don't meet the needs that they say they do. Thank you to whoever answered my question.

Hi Laureana,

Check with the music director as healthy11 has suggested. Our volunteer music teacher says it's ok to buy strings on eBay, and I'd assume a clarinet would be ok too if you know what you're looking for. But find out specifically what they recommend, so you know what you're comparing as prices can vary wildly.

Defnitely don't buy instruments without a recommendation. there are cheap, poor quality intruments out there that may cost a little but your child will struggle to make a good sound and become easily discouraged.
