School lottery - school choice

I would like to enter the school lottery in the hopes that I get my eldest into another, better, Middle School. My question is, do we lose our spot in our currently assigned school by trying the school lottery? Or is it that if we don't win in the school lottery do we default back to our home school?

SallyA,

Every district could conceivably have their own rules, so check carefully with yours (Long Beach?).

In LAUSD, if you are in a magnet and apply to another magnet and get in to the new magnet you are automatically removed from the old one--no waiting for you to accept.

But in every other school choice model in my district, you apply and have a right to turn it down--including NOT being in a magnet and getting in via lottery.

My first reaction to your question is no, but definitely check with your district for the most accurate information.

Yes, I'm in Long Beach Unified. I'm trying to choose another school within the same district. We just don't want him to end up getting sent to another school that's even worse than his current school by trying for the school lottery. I'll double check with the school just to be sure that we don't lose our current school as an option. Thank you. :-)
