we are moving to SA this summer and my daughter who will be in 7th grade is a GT student. What are some the better schools for students in this classification?

Hi iffy028,

Here's where to start: http://www.greatschools.org/find-schools/

Type in your zip code, and read the parent reviews for schools and compare the rankings. While all schools will have GT students, you'll be able to see which schools cater to the needs of gifted students.

Good luck!

I live in LA and also have a going to be 7th grader who is gifted. He is also a honor scholar with John Hopkins and young scholar with the Davidson Academy for Gifted children so I have done a lot of research looking for the right school for him next year. So many offer gifted classes but when you look closely they really aren't classes for gifted children, just classes for kids that may be above the middle of the class. Are you in LA? I ask because your question said you are moving to SA this summer and I just assumed you meant LA. My son will be attending Heschel middle school next year as they have many levels of classes within every class there. You can email me further at leighcarmel@aol.com if you are in LA and I can give you more info if you'd like.

my daughter is gifted but we are not in SA nor is she in the 7th grade. but here is what I found out in my research: lots of enrichment - the bigger the variety the better, especially self directed enrichment courses. also look for project based schools or inquiry besed schools such as IB or Waldorf. Good luck : )

Thank you all for your responses we are moving to San Antonio, TX. I now know what to ask. Leighra, we are a military family currently in MD. I just found out about the Hopkins program and we'd planned to have her attend a program this summer but we're moving in June.

There are GT programs in the public schools in SATX. The premier school district is NEISD.

We moved here when my son was starting 6th grade - he goes to Lopez MS which is recognized as the top middle school in the San Antonio area. I'm not sure what you're used to, but we moved here from Seattle and I had a difficult time as a parent adjusting to the very strict operations of the schools in NEISD. They are also very large schools - I think Lopez has around 1400 students. It's a fairly new school - in its 4th or 5th year. I would recommend it, however it may be a commute to one of the local military bases for you.

Overall I have been pleased with the curriculum, organization and teachers and principal. Good luck with your move!
