my daughter is a social butterfly

MY DAUGHTER IS A SOCIAL BUTTERFLY AND GETS SUSPENDED EVERY WEEK AND I DONT KNO WHAT TO DO, SHE ALWAYS GETS INTROUBLE BUT I MEAN SHE IS A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL, GOING TO 8TH GRADE (SUMMER 2012) BUT I JUST DONT WANT HER TO KEEP GETTING IN TROUBLE, AND SHE IS IN AVID. BUT SHE IS VERY SMART AND INTELLEGENT.

I definitely agree with the two teachers who posted, but you also want to make sure she's not being disrespectful to the teachers and advice her that being social is a good thing, but that she needs to exercise respect for others too. Explain that shes very smart but her peers may not have the type of understanding she does and that she would want her friends to be able to receive the same type of education she does. Being social at lunch or during recess is a great time but not during class. She may realize that talking during class is more than just funny its keeping her friends from learning. Maybe she can use being social to help her friends with their work that way she wouldn't get in trouble. if you don't know what she wants to be when she grows up explain that having so many suspense's on her record could damage her getting into the high school she wants or if it continues the college that she wants. Pretty much explain that its fun now but the bigger picture may not be so nice show her how to use being social as a way to help out the teacher and her peers so she doesn't get suspended. Clearly the suspensions aren't working - the suspensions don't seem to change her behavior. I might point that out to the school and ask them - what is their intention in giving her weekly suspensions? Do they hope to modify her behavior or do they just give suspensions for the sake of it?
Ask the school to appoint one of the teachers as your daughter's particular advisor. She needs a guide within the system. 79652

I am a teacher with over 11 years of experience teaching at the middle school level. Socializing is an important tool that will be needed as an adult. You did not state what exactly the suspension stated. I can only at this point assume that they state she disrupted the learning environment. Although it is important to ask questions to those parts of the lesson not understood and to discuss the material when working in collaborative groups, it is not the best environment to socialize as it interferes with others who are focused on the lesson being taught. Sit down with your daughter and recommend that she socialize during lunch, before or after school. In the adult world when we attend meetings or when we are in college we are expected to hold comments and focus on the topic, it is a skill that you are going to have to stress to your daughter.
