My husband and I have been talking about moving from New Jersey to California. He needs to be close to, if not in Los Angeles and I fear its not where my children need to be.

We are both expanding in our careers, but I would rather take the risk of driving an hour or so to give them a better school system or location.

Question: Are there any great public schools (all we can afford) in Los Angeles that I should look into?

Hi Parentblues, and welcome to the GreatSchools Parent Community.

I'm in the suburbs of Los Angeles. There are PLENTY of areas within an hour of Los Angeles that have great schools. I'm not sure if you're looking to buy or rent, or which area you're actually needing to be near since Los Angeles is a large metropolis.

If you can give any hints, I can definitely point you in the right direction. Areas like Burbank, Ventura County, and Santa Clarita all are options. And even within LAUSD there are great places to live--and magnet schools to attend, although the first year you won't be eligible since you have to live here before you can apply in most cases. But LAUSD has great open enrollment and other opportunities.

Hope to hear from you soon.
