My son has attended VHES for kindergarten and first grade, and we have been extremely pleased with his teachers, quality of instruction and supportive school community. The principal does an excellent job of fostering a positive academic environment. Our son's teachers have done an excellent job of providing enrichment opportunities in areas where he excels, and we appreciate that the school is ethnically and economically diverse. There are two areas in which I believe Mounds View schools are lacking: world language and social studies instruction in the lower grades. They do begin Spanish instruction in the fourth grade, but it is at such a minimal frequency as to be barely useful. VHES is not our neighborhood school, but we chose to send our son there after touring several area schools - both in the Mounds View district and in neighboring districts. While it is quite convenient to my husband's workplace, it is also the school that we felt would do the best job of meeting our child's needs.
Valentine Hills staff and administration have been extremely supportive of our family. We recently moved to the area and our 2nd grader had a tough time adjusting. The principal as well as his teachers met with us on several occasions in order to create the best solution for our family. By the end of the year he had adjusted and is now making excellent progress.
My son lost all of 2nd grade at Valentine hills. Kindergarten and 1st grade he had great teachers but because he ended up with a bad teacher in 2nd grade all education was lost to him. Unfortunately, the admin staff were not supportive when we asked for help. New school and new year, hoping and trying to catch up now in 3rd grade.
Both my kids love this school because the teachers really try to help them understand the materials and excel. My daughter and son's math skills and reading skills have excelled since they have transfered to Valentine Hills.
