I have 3 children currently in this district. Difficult to work with administration if student has any 'special needs' or if you have any 'parent concerns' that are outside the 'norm'. They preach about parent involvement, but only want it at arms length. This school has a number of positives, but there are many reasons to be concerned. The atmosphere is not outwardly friendly or warm to families...for the difference, just tour the two elementary schools in this district and you will immediately understand.

I have taught in this school several times as a substitute teacher. The school is welcoming and seems to have a strong sense of order and discipline. There could be more parent involvement however, the overall atmosphere is very good. The students come from a range of economic backgrounds but are generally very respectful. I have been in other schools in which this sense of order is not there. I also do not feel the school is a political battle field as is obvious with some locations. For the most part, professionals act as professionals.

My son is a Kindergartner at Independence Elementary and is enjoying it thoroughly. Before he began this year we were concerned with his developing self control. Any issues that arose about our child's behavior were brought to our attention promptly by his teacher, and now simple daily reports have made our experience with our son's early education very involved and fulfilling.

Big Lake has made some incredible changes in the past 2 years! I always feel welcome when I go to the school. I have 3 children in 3rd, K and Preschool. The school calls me with any concerns and I am able to contact the teachers by e-mail or by telephone that is located in the classroom at any time. I have also gone to my children s classroom without prior notice with out any problems.

We are new to this district this year, and I am not sure about it yet. I realize they are extremely careful on their safety issue, but I do not like the fact that I do not feel welcome at anytime. They encourage parent involvement, but make it difficult to participate at a moments notice, but yet they encourage it. This is the thing that I do not like, as far as the education, my kids seem to be doing well.
