In reply to the comment made in 2004, The school at the that time was meant to focus on the individual students interests, if the student was not prepared to take a large amount of responsibility they then should have definitely transferred to another school. The school received a new director about 4 years ago and has changed the focus some what to that of college prep that still focuses on the arts.
HCIS requires students to work within Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. This has everything to do with exposing students to a variety of systems and nothing to do with budgetary constraints. Today's 'industry standard' may change.
In this, unlike the other statement, what you see is what you get, and so much more. The academic programs force the student to get involved and take responsibility for their own actions. There are many music programs to choose from and an overwhelming ammount of clubs and activties that students create themselves. Parents are free to communicate with the basecamp teacher (and any other teacher) whenever they would like, and there is also an online program to check your child's grades and contact the teachers. The technology and environment here is truly astounding.
On the outside it looks to be a great school. Terrific sales pitch, but as an educator and a parent of a student that attends Harbor City, I can attest that looks can be deceiving. The curriculum is spotty at best, and parent/teacher communication is frighteningly lacking. At the moment I am suspecting that the school is having financial difficulty as the school is switching from using Microsoft xp and Microsoft Office, the industry standard, to Linux operating system and a free-ware office program for kids to do homework on. The school seemed like a great idea at the time, but now we are exploring East HS, and others.
