Great school, used to go there. Great teachers. Anyone that lives near here should let their kids go to school here.
I, someone who has gone through this school district, personally reccomend this school. The teachers are amazing and very helpful, the classes are challenging, and at everybody's individual level, and the students are the friendliest people I have ever met. If you are between two schools, opt for Mahtomedi.
We have a GREAT school, with wonderful, engaging teachers, and involved parents
Mahtomedi Middle School is the best school ever!! All the teachers are extremely nice and so are the students. If you are trying to pick somewhere to send a student, send them to Mahtomedi.
I love this school. It really challenges me to do well. I love all the teachers and staff. The school has amazing opportunities for the students. This school offers the use of laptops given to you in class. Its really cool; the best school I have ever been to.
Mahtomedi Middle School has good teachers and is academically a great school. But it is very cliquey. I've been to many schools but this is by far the worst. Lots of my friends get pressured to buy brand named clothes such as Hollister and Abercrombie. Lots of the girls are snooty and I highly recommand not going to this school. I shadowed and people were nice to me, on my first day, people put their feet up on the empty chairs during lunch so unless you want your kid to have some serious depressant issues, then please DO NOT send them to Mahtomedi. Thnx! <3
I have sent one child through high school and I have another in the elementary school at mahtomedi. Although my experiences were fantastic in the elementary school, I do not plan on having my child attend the middle and high school. These schools are geared only towards the accelerated students. Although they have very good programs for kids with special needs and learning disabilities, and some very good teachers, it seems that the average student can easily be left behind and can get very frustrated with school in general. Students have to pay a large fee to park in the parking lots and extracurricular activities are at least twice that of the surrounding areas(tennis at Stillwater is 1/3 of Mahtomedis cost). Not to mention, extracurricular activities fill up so quickly that the same kids get in every year because they know the coaches etc. Peer pressure is big issue
Excellent teachers. Poor leadership from the principal. A large variety of classes, etc.
I think the organizer with separate, labeled folders for each subject, and the notes the student is supposed to enter during each class regarding that day's/week's assignments, are very helpful. I can review that information with my child each day. I can also check the online parent view for each class: assignments, upcoming tests, grades. Now, getting the child to remember books and notes each day in their backpack on the way home is no guarantee. However, I've seen friends' kids at other schools fail on organization, too; and they were AP kids, taking college courses at the U of M during high school.
You may think of this as one of the best schools in the Twin Cities, it is for most kids, but not all. If your child lacks organization skills, their grades may be very low, even if they are bright and do well on tests. Very few teachers help students learn these skills. They have high standards, but allow these students to fall through the cracks. Expect a fair share of homework. They expect parents to pay for many things that other schools may not. Sure they have assistance to low income homes, but what about the mid income that don't qualify? They do have many extracurricular programs, but I rated it lower then I would have, if the cost wasn't a factor. I am comparing this school with Crosswinds School because I have a child at both and Crosswinds does much better with these areas.
