I have one daughter (with special needs) who just started middle school and two sons who are currently attending Folwell. I can honestly say that the Principal, teachers, and paraprofessional are fabulous! They are dedicated to the children and truly care for their well-being. I volunteer in my childrens classes at least a couple of times a month and am always impressed at how inclusive the children are of one another. The current special education teachers are amazing. Their dedication to the children and open communication have been my daughters key to success. In addition, they take a TEAM-based approach (principal, teacher, special education teacher and parents). There is a very large number of parent volunteers which makes this school extra special. The children really benefit from additional programs that the school district could not afford otherwise. I am proud to be a FOLWELL parent!
Folwell is an excellent elementary school which will always have a special place in our hearts. The students strive for and expect success, and the parents take the time to be involved and really care. As a social network, the students are very close but also confidently spread their social wings upon entering the much larger middle and high school. Even then they remain close, my college child still has 'Folwell reunions' with her elementary class and all are invited, not just a select few. That inclusiveness along with the excellent academics provide a near ideal experience.
We just moved to Rochester last year and enrolled 3 of our children at Folwell. Folwell is a charming and small community school. This affords a little bit smaller class sizes as well as lots of personal attention from teachers. They are a tight-knit group, but afforded our children a very warm welcome. The teachers are by far the biggest selling point of this school. They are phenomenal.
Be very carefull of this school. When looking at the test scores, keep in mind the educational and socio-economic level of the parents. If your child is bright and will do well in any educational setting, s/he will probably do great at Folwell. And your child will be in a very homogenous mix of kids, which you may find comforting. If your child is eccentric or has indivdual needs, be prepared to go it alone. My experience is that the only advocate for your child at this school is the parent. As the parent you will face a lot of resistance (not apathy but rather a more offensive ethic of parent v. school).
Folwell is an excellent, smaller neighborhood school where most everyone knows everyone else. Most of the teachers are excellent and students do extremely well when they go on to middle school.
