I am a semi retired social worker and sub teacher who works with the Karen children. I don't have contact with the staff at Central Park. My concern is that so many of the Karen kids I know have terrible spelling and English skills! Many have been here for 5 to 6 years now. They should know the "silent e " rule for sure! A 12 year old I know quite well there, doesn't know multiplication yet! Hardly a one! He doesn't strike me as mentally disabled at all. I don't feel they should be in all Karen classes for more than 2 years after they arrive in the US. How can someone be in an English school for 5 or 6 years and say " My brother and ther friens"? Of course they speak to each other in their own language all day. They need to be divided up and held to higher standards! Why aren't more of them going to Parkview? As to parent involvement, many parents don't speak English, have younger kids at home and don't have cars.
If I could give zero strars I would. My son has autism and many other disorders and was placed into this school as the district said it was the most capable to assist with his special needs. At every turn we have received resistance and they refuse to help. They state they have no other kids like ours and they will work on it. This school cannot support special needs and does not care about special needs students.
My children attended this school years ago and we always loved this school as our neighborhood school. Then three years ago my grandson started Kindergarten here and this year another grandson began kindergarten. We have had the most wonderful experience with all of the staff. The teachers and principal are some of the most caring professionals meeting the challenges of this century. As a former teacher, I volunteer at the school often and I would encourage anyone to go and visit the school or even better volunteer and you would want your child to be a part of this environment. The world is changing and this school is definitely teaching our grandchildren what it is like to live peacefully together with people of all backgrounds. It makes me sad also when gossip starts going on in neighborhoods. I think that everyone needs to think for themselves on what they want for their children. I would highly recommend this school to everyone.
The reviews on here make me really sad, and could not be farther from the truth. I enrolled my daughter in Central Park knowing full well the challenges talked about in a fews of the reviews. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the staff and teachers at this school. They are passionate, hard working and genuinely care about the kids. The principal knows almost every child by name when she see s them in the halls. Yes,there is a large minority population. So what?? Welcome to life people.. the world has a big minority population. These kids are wonderful, respectful and so kind. I am on the PTA, and very involved in many aspects of this school. If you have concerns about test scores that really have no bearing on what is really happening with in the walls, go and tour the school yourself, talk to other parents whose children attend and didn't run because of a few refugees who go to school there. Look beyond the surface, and make your own opinion. Central Park Elementary is not going downhill.. it is changing for the better, and is truly a wonderful neighborhood school. I'm proud my daughter goes there.
This school has changed vastly over the past 5-10 years. When I was a student here, the majority of the teachers were enthusiastic, well-focused, and had a clear direction. As the other reviewers have shown, this is no longer the case. The school's minority population has increased a ton since I last attended. This isn't a bad thing, but as the other reviewer noted, this gives the school no clear direction. This school was once terrific, but I hear more and more horror stories mount as the years go by. Stay away.
As a former student here ,I had peace of mind knowing I could send my own child to this school with great expectations of a well rounded student.Unfortanataly ,I have been disappointed time and time again with these last two years. Ranging from my child being bullied to the same problems mention in the two comment s.The problem with the bully really put me in a tailspin, as it would with any caring parent. I had a child crying minutes before school because of a bully in her class. This is going to happen sometime in their youth, I knew this, but the way it was handled from us directly talking to the teacher and principal was to simple unexcuseable.The teacher and more importantly the principal were absolutely useless . What I pulled a way from that experience was that your child is on it's own in that school.BEWARE .
The Principal is divisive towards parents and the staff. There's several good teachers, but they lack motivation or direction. Central Park used to be a wonderful school, with strong participation from the teachers, staff and parents. Sadly, that's not the case anymore.
Test scores have plummeted due to a transition to a more challenging population of families. The population on free and reduced lunch and minority students has greatly increased. While a diverse population can be a rewarding experience, the challenge of educating the new students has caused a shift in the goals of the school. There are no goals to raise the scores of children who meet or exceed standards. The goals are only on bringing up the scores of children from the underachieving families. Central Park hasn t had a functional Gifted and Talented program for the past two school years. Central Park has very limited parent involvement and the PTA has little support from the school staff. Central Park talks about embracing diversity, but the school immediately bans anything they think will offend even one person.
