Such a great school and the total package, definitely worth my money. The only problem is some teachers in the science department, they don't fulfill what I thought would be a helpful and unique learning style. My child always complained that her earth science teacher would not being willing to help and seemed very disorganized. My child was right. When I went to conferences, he had not a single interest in my child's education, he only spoke about his life before teaching and for a few minutes or so about how my child was doing. After talking with a few other parents, it seems my child and I weren't the only ones who weren't too fond of him.
As a parent of a recent graduate I have nothing but praise for Hill-Murray. The curriculum is rigorous and students are definitely challenged. Contrary to some perceptions, hockey is not the center of the universe at Hill. I am not the parent of a hockey player and I never once felt that this was the case. There are so many opportunities for students to shine and find their niche. The theatre department is top-notch, the ministry and service opportunities are fantastic and the teachers and staff and hard-working and dedicated. The families are committed and the alumni are very supportive of the school. Our experience has been wonderful and we love Hill- Murray.
I taught in the public schools for several yrs before HM. I had hoped that students would be more eager to learn than in my former (inner-city school.) I had hoped that we would be able to really delve into the content and have a great time learning. However, students (at least in my content area) are literally a year behind my former students. And they seem stunned when I give them homework over the weekend. (Usually it's not more than 20min. worth of work. I discovered a lot of gaps in knowledge that they should have learned. I've brought up my concerns to other colleges and admin, but no one seems very concerned about that. I feel it's a huge disservice to students to not teach them more quality content, and not to help them reach their full potential. For the most part staff is nice, and some of the kids are nice too, but I'm disappointed. I had hoped for a more educational environment. I truly feel that the school is more concerned with maintaining a good hockey team than academics (esp. considering they cancel full days of class to go to games). I can only speak for my department/subject though. I hope other departments are more rigorous.
I am a recent alum from Hill and I am very proud to say that my future is brighter than I ever imagined. I am currently working on my studies in Germany and I feel very prepared but I miss the dedication that my old teachers had! I will never forget at graduation, walking out to be greeted by all my teachers since middle school. I felt so emotional, Hill-Murray is a very special place! Hill-Murray will always be my second home!!!!
Great experience overall. Great extracurriculars that offer something for every child - not just the athletes. Giving back to the community is not only lip service, it is a graduation requirement. It is faith-based Catholic, but positive and welcoming to all. The school continues to move forward through improvements to buildings and investment in science and technology.
Hill-Murray is beyond exceptional in preparing students for life after high school. Being in college now, I feel incredibly prepared in all course subjects, as well as prepared to live life away from home. Hill-Murray teachers really care about the well-being of their students and are extremely dedicated to their work. I will forever love Hill-Murray!
This is my first year at Hill-Murray. I was instantly welcomed upon coming to Hill. The students, and staff make you feel right at home. Not only are the sports here outstanding, but the teachers dedication to teach. Academically, Hill-Murray has taught and prepared me for the future. I wouldn't want to go anywhere else! It is a great school.
Excellent school! We have one there now and will have 2 more, I wish my oldest would have gone, hind sight :(
Spend your money elseware. I wish they put as much effort into the classroom as they do the hockey team. The math and science department are not good. The administration isolates itself from problems. Hill Murray needs to focus on the education more. It seems that has become secondary to them.
Amazing school with the best hockey program in the state. (and probably country, too) If you live in the east metro and can go there, go there!! And go Pioneers. Probably tghe best school in the state, athletically and academically.
I'm a Hill Murry alumni now looking (and rating) kindergarten programs (and beyond) for our children. Hindsight being 20/20, I say with confidence that Hill Murray is a complete package. Teachers genuinely wish to see students succeed both socially and academically. I continued to a private college where I was proud (and relieved) to have had an impressive academic foundation set in place at Hill. Expensive yes, worth it absolutely! Invest in your children!!
This school has made me feel welcome, and with the stress of college coming - I'm not all that worried because Hill has prepared me for such things. I play three sports at Hill; and I enjoy the courage you get from others, I believe its a tight knit community and everyone can fit in somewhere. Teachers want to see you succeed at this school, not just pass you and forget you.
i have been at Hil for 2 years and its a great school easy to make friends teachers are nice and gets you prepared for college. Go Mr. Otto
i absolutely loved this school. i was there for six years (7-12) and couldn't have been happier anywhere else. yes there were the occasional stuck up rich kids but most people were very nice and down to earth. i felt like i belonged. and all the teachers were very kind to me and my peers. i would recommend this school to anybody!
I have mixed feelings about the experiences my children had at Hill Murray...on the one hand, there were excellent opportunities for extra-curriculars and a great A.P. and Honors program. On the other hand, the quality of teachers was quite poor. HM does not, in any way, embody a good, Catholic environment based on Church teachings. The math and science departments are sporadically strong, with some good teachers and some absolutely dreadful ones, but we had good luck with the social sciences, language, and English departments. HM seems to be mired in beaurocracy and administration, and my final recommendation is to spend your money elsewhere. The school just isn't worth it.
When I arrived at college 5 years ago, I was very well prepared, much more so than many of my peers. Before I graduated, my peers and I were heavily recrutied by Universities. The school may have changed, but during my time English, history and the other humanities were strengths. It is a very safe school with loads of out-of-school activities, not just sports and band.
I would recommend Hill-Murray to anyone. I looked at many different schools, but I chose Hill because of the higher academic standards and the extracurricular opportunities. During my time there I participated in 3 different sports, theatre and other activities. I left Hill with a very strong education, a scholarship to my dream school, great friendships and a strong sense of self. I genuinely do not have any bad memories from high school. After graduation, I found myself to be significantly more prepared than most of my peers, and I credit that to my teachers at Hill. Not every teacher was the best by any means, but there were quite a few great teachers that made an impact. I still consider myself a Pioneer, and I plan to send my own children there.
For a self proclaimed college prep school we were left very DISAPOINTED with what little preparation was done for our child. Very weak Math and English program. If you has a stong interest in hockey or theatre, great school; otherwise- not worth the $8,400.00 price tag.
The quality of academics varies. Some areas are above average while others are laughable. Their theater program is wonderful while their science department is a joke. For a catholic school the administration sets a below average example for their students. They often turn a blind eye towards poor, sometimes criminal behavior. Too top heavy with ineffective administrators. The enrollment is only around 1000 yet the school has; president principal 9-12 chief financial & planned giving officer vice president for advancement. Assistant principal for student activities assistant principal for student life admissions director business manager dean of students development associate development director principal 7-8 my advise; spend your money elsewhere.
I was dissappointed that this school, which claims to be Catholic, did not seem to act in accordance with what it claims it's values are. My daughter was robbed on more than one occassion and the staff did not appear alarmed by this, nor did they do anything about it. A second child visited the school and came home saying that there was prolific swearing and people were very unkind to one another. I also felt that there was little supervision during study hall times and was shocked to find that the teachers do not even require the students to do actual school work during the study hour. Money could be better spent at a different school in my opinion.
