Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I recently graduated from MPA and I can proudly say that I wouldn't change anything about my experience there. It's academically challenging, provides a great learning atmosphere and both the faculty and students are incredible. It prepared me for college especially in writing papers. I can honestly say that it is one of the most amazing communities that I've ever witnessed.

Mounds Park Academy gave my two children a fabulous education. The teachers are terrific and the lessons are innovative. The students are always engaged because there are so many things to keep them interested.

My daughter received a great education through eighth grade here, and was well prepared to take the most advanced classes at our large public school (including two classes we were told were typically for grades above her). She received straight A's, but complained none of her classes were as challenging as those she had had at MPA as a middle schooler. Needless to say, she returned to MPA the following year where she was immediately welcomed back by peers and teachers, and was once again challenged by rigorous and interesting curriculum in class sizes that allowed personal connection and more grade-heavy assignments.

It is no coincidence that our alumni are amazing, successful people, who contribute to their communities and to the broader society in positive, meaningful ways. The Mounds Park community is a rare gem. I am happy to be a part of it, and even happier for my children. Mounds Park helps children realize their potential, academically and beyond. That is exactly what I want for my kids.

My son attended here for pre-k and kindergarten. We were very happy with the pre-k program but everything went downhill after that. Not impressed with some teachers at this school. Many are less than competently dealing with minor behavior issues and discipline. We demonstrated a need for financial aid for his would-have-been third year of attendance but were denied. Quite frankly, this was a blessing because it turned out that our public school has been fantastic. Sure, some kids probably get a great education at MPA, but it isn't any better than what you can find at some public schools and not have to pay ridiculous tuition rates. Save your money for college.

MPA has been a great place for our two boys to learn and grow. They both have really liked their high school experience - and that alone is huge. In addition to being strong in traditional academics, the school's music, art, and theater programs are outstanding. The leadership promotes and exemplifies a culture of caring. If you were trying to design a really excellent school starting from scratch, MPA is the kind of place you'd create.

Mounds Park Academy is an incredible place to be! The atmosphere of the school is warm and nurturing, with top notch academics. The faculty are exceptionally dedicated and passionate. The small class sizes allow for your student to thrive with as much one on one instruction as possible. I would highly recommend taking a tour of MPA to see for yourself this wonderful place for students!

This school is serious about educating the "whole child." It has an excellent arts program all the way from K-12, has strong academics, and puts a lot of emphasis on helping children grow into independent thinkers and leaders. The school is very inclusive of diverse families which is important to us and to our child. They really encourage individuality and respectful self-expression. It's a great place.

This school has been an excellent fit for my daughter! It has challenged her academically in a way that her previous school could not. The staff is available to the students and takes a vested interest in each individual. The environment is such that students are more than the athlete, the smartest student, the musician, or the artist. Every student is encouraged to explore all of their interests and talents. It allows them to be the individuals that they are, and encourages them to become leaders.

I am so proud to say that I am an alumni of this amazing school. MPA facilitated the development of my incredible love of learning, wide variety of cultivated interests and deep self of self-worth. It without a doubt laid the foundation for every success that I have had in my life. It wasn't until I got to college that I truly realized how unique it is to have a collection of faculty as passionate about teaching and building strong relationships with their students as we have at MPA. Everything academic is exactly what you would hope to find at a college-prep independent school: the curriculum is challenging and unique, homework bountiful, advanced and honors courses a plenty... but what I now realize sets my experience at MPA apart is the fact that not only does the school strive to develop excellent students, they are even more deeply committed to cultivating excellent human beings. Good, compassionate people. And I think that's worth a lot.

I am a student at Mounds Park Academy, and I really really like it. I have gone here since kindergarten, and I have never been bullied, and I've always felt accepted. The teachers are wonderful with maybe two exceptions. There's lots of wonderful field trips to go on, and MPA is like my second home. The lunch is another great thing, it's delicious and healthy too. Honestly, I feel like this school is completely worth the price.

We had a great experience there for a while. Teachers (with a few exceptions) don't know how to handle behavior challenges. Think twice if you will need financial aid. You will not be valued, and will be gone as soon as a wait list develops.

FIRST OUR STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE WORLD. THEN THE WORLD LEARNS ABOUT OUR STUDENTS. At Mounds Park Academy we don't just encourage independent thinking, we insist on it. Our job is to help children see the world through their eyes, not ours. For more than 28 years, we've used this approach to nurture a child's curiosity. Because once the joy of learning is instilled, the passion lives on.

MPA returned a joy of learning to my children. They are as likely to do more than asked because it was an interesting assignment, as complain about homework. The faculty and staff make an effort to know the students and interact with them.

We have been so pleased with MPA! Our children love it there. They pop out of bed every morning and are excited about going. We are always amazed that the teachers have such a full understanding of our children. They really take the time to get to know them and to help them learn by tailoring to the way each individual learns best. Class size is small. Whole child is definitely the emphasis. Art, music, foreign language and drama all regular classes even in lower school. It is amazing because there is no skimping on basics. Our kids seem to be quite ahead of their peers at other schools in basics, but they have all the 'extra' stuff too. Faculty are very committed to excellence and to making the experience great for the students. Children are taught to learn concepts....not memorize and spit things back. Admin. is top notch!!!!!

This is one of the best schools in the country! Mounds Park Academy's commitment to educating the whole child is seen in virtually every aspect of the curriculum and is reflected in students (Pre-K through 12) who are bright, well-rounded, curious, imaginative and engaged. My son is an 8th grader who has attended since kindergarten and two main aspects stand out to us. We appreciate MPA's approach to integrated learning, where top-notch teachers in various subjects reinforce common topics from diverse angles. We also love how nearly all of the students, especially in Middle and Upper School, routinely participate in sports, music, drama AND academic clubs. At MPA, it's cool to be smart!

I love the way I am a partner in my son's education with the teachers. He's in Kindergarten and I feel like his teachers get who he is, love his strengths and aren't afraid to talk to me about his weaknesses - or opportunities for growth.

We love MPA! I love that when my child walks down the hall, every adult he encounters knows his name, his history, his strengths and his challenges. We started in pre-K and are now in 3rd grade. Every teacher we've worked with - including homeroom and all specialists - takes the extra time to find out what makes my child tick and how to nurture him to be the best learner he can be. They also work with him individually on his self-confidence and social skills. The families at MPA are all very engaged with their child's education and work toward making MPA a strong community. There isn't pressure to volunteer, but there are many opportunities to do so. While I was against sending my child to a private school, I can't imagine sending him anywhere else. MPA is worth every penny!

We were disappointed with our local public school. Although some of the public school teachers were excellent, the school did not have the resources for anything other than the basics. Our son is thriving at Mounds Park Academy. The teachers are exceptional and he has specialists teaching him art, drama, Spanish, physical education. I'm also very pleased with the diversity at this school. He's getting challenging academics in a very supportive environment.

This is our sixth year at the school and we've seen many positive changes along the way. The faculty and staff are 100% committed to the school's mission of the independent child. The whole child approach engages each of our children to bring out their best in all they attempt. The rigorous academics and learning habits combined with the fine and creative arts offers an enviroment that allows for problem solving that is imaginative and not usual. As our family has moved into each division of the school, we are amazed at the resources provided in the classrooms and to us as parents. The parent community is vibrant and active and allowed to voice concerns to faculty, staff, and administration openly. This network of engaged families provides support throughout the school year and beyond, focusing not only on the support of school events but also on raising children. It's fantastic!

Mounds Park Academy is really good at engaging students in their own education. They learn how to solve problems rather than simply memorize answers. It's great to watch students grow as their intellect and self-confidence develop.

The school and class size may be a bit too small for some people. If your kids are highly gifted or have special needs, don't send them there, they can't accommodate them. Our two kids graduated from the school and are now attending small private colleges. Neither we nor our kids thought the money we spent on MPA was worth it.

MPA has been the best experience for our family. My children have thrived in this wonderful environment! While the tuition is high, the education my children have received is top notch. It is not a school for the 'wealthy' only. The small class sizes, the feeling of community, the language and arts programs, hands on learning, and so much more, make MPA stand out from the rest. The level of parent involvement completely depends on the parent. MPA has many, many opportunities to volunteer if you are able. If you can't volunteer, you are not made to feel 'guilty'. Magazines drives, candy sales, plant sales. Whatever the fundraiser, there are no requirements, only opportunities.

We've now been at MPA for 6 years. Especially starting in 4th grade, you get your money out of this school. The small classes, great teachers/staff and strong academic focus including world language, arts, music, drama - all beginning as early as Kindergarten allows for an amazing learning environment. We love that MPA offered full-day Kindergarten and that our children can be at the same school PreK thru 12! Parents are very involved and lend a supporting hand continuously at MPA. The only downside we've felt at MPA is the significant amount of fund raising (especially in the past few years) needed to support their campus growth efforts. Overall we are very happy and our child would be heart broken if we told her she had to go someplace else!

I am actually a middle schooler at MPA. I think one thing that makes our school so different it that we feel like a true family. everyone is accepting and always has something nice to say. i have been here since kindergarten and proud of it! i would definitely recommend this school. we also have some new facilities you might want to check out!!

I disagree with reviewers that advocate that the school instills few values. While there are students who live in a place other than the real world, many maintain a firm grasp of what really is going on. The academic programs the school offers are great - however the small size of the school stops it from offering a variety of classes and programs, so if one's child is very gifted in a certain activity, I'd look elsewhere. However, MPA sends a disproportionately large number of kids to the All State Programs, and does very well in the arts (MPA has some of the best speech coaches in the state). The school's small student population translates to having quality of programs dictated by student interest (usually). For the unmotivated child, MPA is great because it surrounds the child with very motivated students. For students with specialized interests, check out Eastview/Applevalley/Eagan.

My children have been at MPA for 4 years and we couldn't be happier. It is a college prep school that knows how to think outside the box. The teachers are creative with their curriculum and assignments. In addition to the core subjects, my chldren have foreign language daily and have Drama, Art, Music, Computer and Library every other day. The classes sizes are small and the teachers are caring and passionate. My children have been taught to be independent and responsible students. The entire school (PK - 12) is in one building which makes the transition of moving up a grade each year very smooth. The teachers know exactly what my children learned the year before and can build on it. This also creates many opportunities for older and younger children to work and learn together. While there are some wealthy families most are just everyday people.

The current base tuition actually ranges from $13.2k to $15.6k. It's a good school, no doubt. Most families are filthy rich, giving the school generous support. My son was there for a year but we pulled him out after realizing that there was no logical fit for him there. However, if you would like to be with the rich and famous, this is the place.

This is a fabulous school! This is our 9th year. The teaching staff is outstanding. They truly care about your child. The academics are rigorous and expectations are high in the Middle and Upper School levels. Parents are very involved in the school but there are no requirements and everyone respects each person's ability to donate time. MPA is a small school and provides so many opportunities for success! The world languages programs start in Kindergarten and are excellent. The school 'fits' many personalities. My daughter is so quiet and shy - her initial goal at school was to participate in class. This past year she tried out for, and performed, a solo at the vocal concert. What a triumph! My son is more outgoing and athletic and struggles to decide which things to do! You will be asked for donations beyond tuition - like all private/independent schools.

This is my childs first year at MPA. We are so happy with the school and it was definately the right choice. The tuition is steep but has been well worth the sacrifice. The academic programs are top notch with a warm, nurturing environment. The enrichment programs are awesome. The theater productions and drama classes will knock your socks off, the language dept. is excellent. Parental involvement is whatever you want it to be. Your child should be an advanced student who is very interested in school. This is an excellent school and we will send our child all the way thru.

The level of parent involvement is way too high! If you don't help, your child feels the effect. Money, money money...they will ask for a lot more than the 12,000 tuition. Language program is the BEST! Overall, if you are loaded, and can pay for a grade this is the place for you. If you want values for your child, go else where!

About this school

Who will your child become? An arist? A diplomat? A poet? An engineer? An athlete? Or, perhaps, all of these? Mounds Park Academy was founded on the belief that children need the opportunity to discover and refine their talents, to be challenged in the classroom until they unlock their true potential, and to be led through values-based education to become globally conscious citizens of character. For more than 30 years, MPA has been the place for students to become who they were meant to be.
