If you want to leave your child's fate up to getting a few of the good teacher at this school. Go ahead! You have no say in what highly personal matters they decide your kids should know (such as Transgender) at every grade level! You have no input because the teachers that are failing, know your children better than you do. They will tell you for months they are working on it as your child falls further behind. Do your kids a favor and drive them to Maplewood. St. Paul schools are full of highly paid people not willing to do their jobs. The Principal does not like anyone who has an opinion that is different than hers, and she only cares about the liberal people that serve her need to be the hero.

Grateful to: Teacher

Mrs. Mary Schmidt, One of the gems. Put in effort and cares about the children. Mrs. Maura Brink, only one who would stand up and help my son. (not teaching anymore)

Amount of homework: Don't know

It depends on the teacher and how well they are. My child had a full year of working well below abilities and being bored because they didn't want to test her and spend the time to teach her at the correct level. Yet my sons teacher would let him fall behind because I asked homework get sent home and he didn't want to bother with working with me.

Develops empathy: Strongly disagree

They over use issues, instead of teaching kids should treat other the way they are they will try to education your children about transgender and that you can have a female body and male brain and vice versa. This results in bulling of other kids because they like longer hair then others. Kids are to young in elementary school to be worrying about gender issues.

Develops honesty: Strongly disagree

They only care about the politics and making the school rating seem better than what it is. They are not fair with any of their students.

This school's test scores finally reflect the competency and quality of the staff and leadership at the school. Most teachers are arrogant, cliquey snd self righteous. They snub anyone who is out of the "I'm Catholic from St. Paul" mindset snd demographic. Most sre poorly traveled and not very wordly or multicultural. The Principal serves the interests of the most powerful loud (most never tire of hearing their own voices) and will bully anyone not in their favor. This principsl is set for life since she is a friend of the Superintendent and loves her cushy placement. The literacy coach is one of the most provincial, narrow minded annoying individuals imaginable but as a favorite of the principal, this type A personality is allowed to run roughshod over .more skilled creative teachers, even going so far as to harass them during a lesson knowing the principal will always support her. This used to be sn excellent school, but the admins. support of provincial staff with no multicultural or urban values, has led them on a downward spiral. All progressive, urban teachers leave as soon as they can.

I am currently a 6 grader at this school and I love it here. The teachers here are very nice and creative, which motivates us students to learn. This school has a Science Fair and this year, 6 students in 6 grade was chosen to go to the Science Fair Regionals at the U of M. You get to learn many new things in technology and have fun doing projects on computer programs. This school having pre-k to 6 grade helps students have a strong friendship to each other because of the 6 years of being at the school. This school is wonderful and I am proud that my parents chose this school as my Elementary School.

We LOVE Nokomis and feel so fortunate to a) have found this school and b) to have received a spot for both of our kids as they waiting list is a long one to get in. The principal is the best one we have ever met, she talked at length about our needs and desires for our kids before we even applied even though it was a long shot that we would get in. She takes pride in her school and in her teacher, as well she should. She is a strong leader, which we have found to be one of the most important qualities in selecting a school. The kids learn at their own pace and advanced when ready, and get extra help when they need it. Our kindergartner came in not totally knowing all of the letter sounds yet, and by the end of the year is reading at a mid 1st grade level. She is not an expection, this is the norm in her classroom. We are trhrilled with the IEP services that our son has recieved as well, they identified additional areas of service that would help him and implimented the plan immediately, he is now excelling as well.
