I am a student at Cleveland High School. The reviews from some parents are not giving the school a very good overview. As a student I enjoy CHS very much. The classes are hard, but are for our benefit, and the teachers are just helping us learn. I think that a student's opinion on their own school is important.

First and foremost, I guess I should begin by saying that I am not a parent of any child, but in fact a student at CHS. I am currently enrolled as a sophmore and from reading recent reviews from parents I think that the school is not being given the credit it deserves. Why not hear it from the source that counts? The student themselves. When I came to CHS my freshman year, I was intimidated...as of course any other student is. But the students and the atmosphere quickly removed that. I can honestly say I've never felt the peer pressure usually implied upon highschool students. And yes, the classes are a bit more demanding, but that is because the teachers just want us to be prepared that everything is not going to be handed to us in real life. The students think it's a great school. Isn't that what counts?

I have children at this school and consider it to be mediocre. They are far too interested in the adherence of a great number of rules and regulations rather than creating an innovative interesting learning environment. This experience is so unlike what we are used to, since my children have never failed classes before when attending larger schools. They may do well for some children, however, I have not spoken to those parents. They cannot acommodate the special needs child appropriately due to 'lack of resources'. In my opinion, there administration somewhat inflexible and their school board is unresponsive. There are some wonderful teachers there who have been extremely helpful and truly desire to motivate these children, which, with a 25% drop out rate nationally, someone in every school should be seeking programs out of the normal manufacturing model, to prevent losing these kids.

As a parent of two CHS students, I must say that I am very satisfied with the education that my children are receiving. The staff is highly trained and dedicated to the students. The diversity of the student body prepares students for real world experiences in which they will have to interact with people from different cultures. CHS is tops on my list of high schools.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Mississippi used the Subject Assessment Testing Program (SATP) to test students in English II, writing, algebra I, biology I and U.S. history at the completion of each course. Students must pass all parts of the SATP in order to graduate from high school. The SATP is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Mississippi. The goal is for all students to pass the test.
