i am a freshmen at hhs and i believe that it is a little bit better than others in hancock but it has some ups and downs... UPS 1) a very good selection of clubs and activities that go a great job at making hhs a better place) 2)a very devoted princepal and assistent princepals 3)keeps a steady pace with education (even if it is slow) DOWNS 1)dress code; it is a hassle if you dye your hair with highlights wear skulls of any kind or simply wear the wrong color shirt. you are going to get written up. no questions asked. 2)bus; there are so many students at this school that the busses are having to put middle school kids with high school and there is 3 to 4 kids in one seat. i dont know that this is normal but it gets hot esp. when you dont have an.................................................
I just wonder if the student who keeps posting negative remarks about HHS teachers just takes the 'easy' teachers since he says he says he has all A's. That is the major problem at HHS; there are some very good teachers, who geniunely teach, and then there are some teachers who just play on their computers, chat on their cell phones, and pass out worksheets and never really teach. Also, I would like to know if he has all A's why he believes the teachers aren't understanding. Is seems like he must have very understanding teachers. Or is it that he late to class, or does he make excuses and expect teachers to fall for them, or does he want everything to be his way. Hancock could be a great deal better; maybe this posters should join the student council and work to see that changes are made.
I would like a chance to validate my post on Sept. 18th. For one thing, I personally do very well in school. I make straight A's, I have never gotten in trouble, and the fact that my spelling skills aren't top-notch doesn't make my opinion any less valuable. I agree that the last principal let most of us off way too easily, but I think the new one was over-doing it a little at the beggining of the school year. However, I may have over-reacted. He has calmed down since then, and I do actually appreciate the level of discipline. Unfortunately, I still feel like the education here definantly could be improved. I would still like to see more emphasis placed on extra-curricular activities, and I feel like the teachers can often be unfair and not understanding enough. Hancock could be a lot worse, but it could also a lot better.
As a student, I have to deal with the utter rediculousness of this school everyday. For one, the discipline is out of control. I understand that discipline is necessary, but it is horrible when the obsession with descipline hinders the education. I personally had to miss half of the first day of school because I was wearing the wrong shade of red shirt. Learning here is neither fun nor creative and every student dreads coming. The teachers just don't care anymore, and would rather send someone to the office at the drop of a hat, then help them. Students are in constant fear of getting in trouble for silly things like the wrong color under-shirt. Some of the rules that the new principle is very strictly enforcing are rediculous and unnessary... A tiny logo on our shirts is not going to harm anyone's education! I hate this school.
I have to agree with the person who posted a comment on September 10th, 2008. We are seeing so many wonderful and exciting new ideas coming to life this year. Two thumbs way up to the outstanding new band director!! He's the perfect blend of intelligence, talent, discipline, and fun. The band program has improved tremendously in a very short time. Also, must say the advanced classes and higher level classes are challenging even for the brightest kids. Good teachers, much improved leadership!
Things have come a long way at this school.I know becasue I see it everyday. There are great things happening . New principals that aren't jokes, the new A.D. is doing a great job, a new head coach who actually cares, teachers who want the best for the students and hard working guidance counselors. Again, great things are happening at Hancock. Hawk Pride!
Hancock High School has many outstanding teachers. Its problem is the lack of educational leadership. All three principals are weak. They rarely make decisions that they stand behind. The head principal is a joke. Has no clue what should be nor what is going on on the campusl
I think this school is great. Just like any other school, you get what you put in it.
I have heard many wonderful things about this school after moving to Mississippi from out of state, but I was extremely disappointed after my daughter entered this school. I completely agree with some of the other reviews here, the academics are very low. The 'discipline' in the school, namely the dress code, is ridiculous. I agree with the dress code idea overall, but the teachers and administration have taken it competely out of proportion. Overall, don't send your child to this school.
I'm a former student of Hancock High School. My perspective of this school is based on when I graduated in the spring of 2005. The sports and clubs were great. Our football team was lagging, but it has a strong tradition and will bounce back in the future. Award winning dance team too. The classes and subject matter were good all around. Many different choices to pick from and vo-tech classes to choose from as well for those that like to learn hands on. Good teachers. They all have plenty of experience and skills, the only problem I saw while I was attending HHS was the principal. She didnt do things I agreed with, such as school uniforms and zero tolerance. But other than that a great southern school all around.
There is only one word for academics that I can say. Horrible. As far as everything else goes, the teachers don't seem to teach the subject, and overall, the school is horrific. If you are making a decision of chosing schools for your children, I would suggest considering other options.
I am a former student from Hancock, but unfortunetly I had to move to Florida and attend school in Navarre because of Katrina. The school I am attending has a low rate of education, in fact, the classes I am taking are no challenge at all. The teachers seem to have no experience and they do not have one on one with students. When I was at Hancock my teachers took their time with each student if they needed help... here no help is to be needed because the classes are too simple. I do believe I have had the best teachers at Hancock and when I return I will take advantage of their way of teaching and graduate with high scores. And by the way I love uniforms! GO HAWKS! -Danleigh
I think the dress code is a bit ridiculous. My child has been sent home for tying his shoelaces the wrong way. It is way out of hand. I, like many parents, think something should be done about it. I hope something changes soon.
I am a past student of Hancock. I graduated in 2002. I transferred to this school from a school in North Georgia. The academic quality at hancock is outstandingly behind what it should have been. One of my teachers at the time had me help explain what some of the lesson meant because nobody was able to understand what they were reading. I was very disappointed with the lack of challenge the classes provided. party over the weekend or where they were getting there next fix from. I feel like my time spent in the Mississippi school system was a waste and cost me a semester of knowledge that if I would have stayed in Georgia I would have been able to grasp and build on. I really hoped the school has shaped up since then.
I do not understand why the school district was so harsh about homecoming week. My daughter is a senior and this is the last time she will ever get to participate in these high school activities and they took that away from her. I personally think they have gone a little too far with the dress code policy. I do agree with the policy to an extent but it is being thrown way out of proportion.
I think the school dress code is a wonderful idea. The overall appearance and attitude of the school had improved dramatically. Most of the kids have adapted very well and even found ways to lend their own sense of style to the dress code. The school is consitently rated among the highest in Mississippi in acedemic, curricular, and attendence rankings. The staff, administration and students take a great deal of pride in making this school an outstanding one.
Well to start I would have to say the the hole dress code is wrong. It is kinda hard to find many of the clothes needed for my child. The pants that you want her to have are very expensive. I dont understand most of it. So what I see is that you are telling me that my child can where a uniform but can behave the same. What some of you don't understand is that you are still going to have some one who is smarter , prettier, fater, skinner. And you are always going to have some one break the dresscode so why punish the ones who haven't done anything wrong. And also I would like to add that my child was sent home one day for dresscode so I know how it is and yes it was because of her shoes whitch is very wrong. ThankYou
This is a present student and this school has many great teachers and many chances for a great education. Activities and the way the teacher go one on one with the students to help them when they need it is what makes Hancock a great shcool.
