This will be the first year that I am here as an administrator. I can already tell that the faculty is very closely bonded and are true team players. We have already implemented many changes. For instance, upwards of 85% of our students are at a 5th grade or below reading level. Therefore, we are sending a teacher to training to become a certified reading therapist. Many of our students are constantly suspended and miss instruction. We will have an on-site ISS that will be manned by our staff so direct instruction will already take place. We are enlisting community members in order to formulate a mentoring program for these young people. Many need direction with their behavior, social interactions and academic progress. We will have mentors that include college students, college athletes, retired school teachers, interested community members and members of local churches. We have secured our own bus route to cut down on discipline issues on the bus. Many times our students were considered the "tough" ones by others and that encouraged acting out behavior. Most importantly, we will have an on-line learning component aligned with our schools. We anticipate great things!
OLC is the best school to work at in the district. That is a well-kept secret, of course. We have a small staff who work well together and are truly a team because we get to know each other better than staff in larger buildings can. We deal with at-risk students and get to go to work and back home each day knowing we can/do impact students' lives. It's a great place to work!
