I am a teacher of 16+ years, a parent of two children who have grown up through the Crawford County R- 1 District and a resident of Bourbon. Our schools have seen many changes over time, people come and go, federal and state funding and policies change all the time but we as a district do truly care about our kids. As the former student mentioned, it's the attitude and drive that will help one achieve. I ask anyone who is reading this to access the following website to access the most accurate results of state test scores. https://dese.mo.gov/
We as a district have a wonderful bunch of teachers who have seen tremendous growth in our district. I am not simply saying this because I am a teacher, but because it is true! So "Great Schools" please update your info!
Many of the teachers are not willing to explain how to do certain subjects, mainly due to the fact they do not know how to do it themselves. From elementary to high school as the years go by, the teachers get worse and less caring. The food that the school serves is awful; the milks are usually expired. The amount of food served from kindergarten to high school is the same. Chromebooks are always broke, so it is hard for students to get the assignments done. The current principal, none of the students seem to like, and the counselor just doesn't care. In closing this, a diploma from this school is not worth much.
I was a student at Bourbon High a few years ago. I had some pretty good competition as far as being veledictorian. Its really the kids attitude towards school that make it worthwhile or not. Whether they learn anything really stems from home. Honestly though, BHS has been in and out of principles in the last 8 years or so. And there have been teachers come and go too. I believe its the lack of incentive to stay. They can't hire someone good and keep them because of the schools budget. Lets face it, Bourbon is a poor town. But all in all, I had a good 4 years in high school and I wish I could go back. You learn what you need to know and it stays with you if you want it to.
Wow! I don't know of anyone who could NOT make straight A's in this school. It's really a shame. All they are asked to do is regurgitate materials that were taught, in some cases, over four years ago. If being Valedictorian is your goal...enroll at Bourbon High School!
We have been in the district for 12 years and 3 kids. Elementary and Middle School are awesome. Their classroom materials and teachers and absolutely wonderful. Then you move on to the High School -- the HS cannot keep the same teachers from year to year, the cannot keep principals and the moral of the ones who do stay is AWFUL!!! There are not enough books for each student to have books in some classes, favortism seems to be the priority of the day and all the while Mr. Gaines sets around over in his office and could care less!!!! I am glad this is the last year we have to deal with this HS!!!
