East Prairie has a wonderful school system. It is blessed with teachers that are excellent in their field and care deeply about their students. For the size of the school the academic programs are excellent; unfortunately, since the school is small (rural) it does lack some high end classes. The school has tried to address this weakness by incorporating an I-TV system to increase course offerings. Any student who wants to succeed at East Prairie will. All teachers are also willing to meet with students parents to discuss problems, solutions, and where the parent can help the student improve. The school makes a concerned effort to allow every student to participate in extracurricular activities; which range from most athletics to student government to academic/arts clubs. If you are considering moving to Southeast Missouri I highly recommend this school. Also, feel free to contact the school itself if you have questions.
I graduated from East Prairie High School in 1998. Several things have changed over the years since I have been there, but I feel I got the best education a small school could provide. Of course a small town high school cannot have the same facilities or offer more classes than big city schools-but the teachers and community work hard to provide the very best for its students.
I am a 2002 graduate of EPHS, and I feel that EPHS is a very good school. I think that an emphasis is put on sports, but not enough to interfere with education. The English department is the shining star; Dorothy Hutcheson should be teaching college English. Athletics in EP are overrated, EP rarely has a winning team at anything, but they always try hard. The administration at the school has improved. The former principal was a 'yes-man' to the school board, but the new one is an independent thinker.
Personally this school cares wat too much about sports and not enough about what kids are learning in the classrooms. They are so far behind than the other schools that it's pathetic. If you are planning on moving to East Prairie my advice for you is don't, move to New Madrid, if your child has been taught in an inner city school then you're child is a genius compared to what the students here in East Prairie have learned or is learning.
