We had our child there for one semester and pulled him out ASAP. There was zero learning going in his primary school classroom and when I talked to the teacher about one minor adjustment that could be made to help get some academics into the classroom, she said she couldn't' do it. There was ZERO creative writing going on and the reading and math instruction were one size fits all. I think the lower school is surviving only because the other choices out there (the public schools) are so horrifically awful. If those are your two choices, I guess I would choose Sion, but I think it would be easier to move to Kansas where you will get an awesome public education.
When one understands that there are no good public school options for students in the urban core of Kansas City, and that there are just two private schools in midtown of any quality, then the attitude at Sion makes sense. The administration knows that there are few options and treats parents that way. That indifference is astounding, particularly in consideration of the tuition. We moved to a quality public school district prior to the last year of our student's time at Sion, but decided to keep him there - HUGE mistake. Particularly if you are a boy, 8th grade at Sion is an afterthought as they groom the girls for attendance at the all-girls Sion High School. Our elective selections this year? Crochet, knitting, music for life, and poetry. The Math program is an absolute disgrace, taught by an individual better suited to be a prison warden. There are committed teachers at this institution, but they are let down by an administration that simply does not care to address its own and the school's shortcomings. Stay far, far away.
I am a male tenth grader attending rockhurst high school in kcmo. I spent my grade school years at the coed notre dame de sion elementary school and it is by farthe best investment you can make for your child. The school is incredibly diverse and in a culturally rich part of midtown kcmo. The academics are marvelous at sion and prepared my classmates and I for high school very effectively. The school welcomes all faith traditions and the astute teachers encourage the students to form their own opinions and be open to new ideas. The school also has excellent art music and sports programs and students can easy find their niche and be accepted for who they are. You will not regret sending your children to, in my opinion, the best school in kc, sion.
By far the number one girls' college prep high school around. They know their stuff and will have your daughter prepared for college beyond your expectations. The administrators are experienced high school level educators who support a strong teaching faculty. My daughter absolutely loves the school and everything about it. What a wonderful place for her to be educated and challenged by her teachers. Sion is truly number one in every aspect. It is excellent!
Went to this school from kindergarten to 8th grade. Best time of my life. Best school in the world!!
Sion has been wonderful, nurturing, caring, very academic. My non Catholic children have thrived in this school. It was the best decision that we have made for their education. I am very impressed with Sion and the staff on every level, and cannot say enough good things about the school.
I recently graduated from Sion (the high school) a few years ago. As I was helping my sister search for schools in Saint Louis for her little ones to begin their academic career I came across this site. I have to tell you Sion was the best decision my parents and I ever made. I had planned on attending another school all throughout grade school. After shadowing the highschool plans had changed. I do not regret it one bit. Every teacher pushed me to be the student I am today. It was 'cool' to be smart, everyone studied and wanted to succeed. I am currently at SLU while I compare myself to others in my classes from Kansas City, I know it was the right choice. I am not afraid to speak up in class, that was expected in high school. I strive for the same success Sion demanded from me.
The year my kids spent at the school were special landmarks in their lives and the school has set high standards of what we want and desire from future schools we want them to attend. The school has set high standards of what we want and desire from future schools we want them to attend. What my wife and I particularly liked was not just the high level of academic excellence, parental involvement, but most of all, the cultural diversity among the students teachers and the staff. This is truely the very best school in Kansas city.
I am a former student of the high school. The absolute best investment you could ever make for your daughter. My father worked a second job and my mother got a part-time job just to send me to this school. Even though we weren't as 'blessed financially' as others, I knew I was just as smart as the girl sitting next to me. If she was going to law school, I was going to persue medicine. Didn't know how I was going to pay for it, but the conselors showed me ways that I could go. I wouldn't be the doctor that I am today if it wasn't for this high school. Just do it!
I am a former student from Notre Dame de Sion elementary school. (Sion as we used to call it.) Sion really helped me to grow as a person. The schools founding principles - love and acceptance for all - created a wonderful environment for me to grow and helped me to value myself and others as individuals. The school also has a really fantastic way of forming the children into conscience adults. At first, teaching them right from wrong, ('No, go to time out')('Very Good!') and later building the students into people who can think independently about their moral decisions. Sion's educational background is phenomonal, they helped me to score consistently above a 95% on the ITBS and helped me earn regular A's and B's. The curriculum is fantastic and the teachers are all well experienced. Sion is really just a great school and I would recommend it to anyone!
