I have really enjoyed Truman. There are a lot of good things to say regarding the school.
Truman has SPARC for the children's childcare before and after school. There is currently breakfast served in the classrooms at no cost. The car line seems to move pretty well and in an organized manner.
Truman is a great school, very professional and friendly. The teachers treat the parents very nicely and clearly cares about the children, giving them the best experience that they can. I am impressed with the classroom environment, the teachers do a good job of encouraging good classroom behavior.
The school nurse, custodians, councilor, and other support staff make an effort to support/help the kids. I had a very kind school nurse as a child, but the current school nurse goes above and beyond.
I have never been concerned about my children's safety in the school. The door is locked after the children come in, so you have to be buzzed in.
I have a child who needed help with reading, writing, and speech. He reads above his grade level and you can understand him. His writing is still catching up, but they work with him and have given me tips to work with him at home.
In 5th grade, the children can attend Orchestra class. In Music class, some grades play the recorder. The Art and PE classes are both awesome, as well. There is a library lesson and library checkout. The kids really enjoy the computer lab.
Truman does a lot of fun activities with the kids, including a fall and spring fundraiser type party. There have been fireworks and bounce activities at the spring event, the fall event being a dance and having indoor games.
The cafeteria has the standard foods, which you can look up a calendar for on sps.
I am a former student here, who is now in 8th grade. After Truman, I left and attended other schools. However, I still have yet to find a school with better treatment of children by teachers, and positive relationships and immediate acceptance of "new" kids. It is public, but honestly there really wasn't ever any trouble by the kids, and when there was the teachers always had it under control. This is one of the best schools you can put your child into.
We moved to a neighborhood when our kids were preschoolers just to enroll them at Truman. They went all the way through from k-gr. 5. I visited the school weekly to have lunch with my kids. I was always impressed with the way teachers treated students. It was a quiet and orderly school. My kids felt safe and respected there. Teachers were innovative in keeping students engaged and worked well with parents to problem solve when issues came up, whether is was socially, academically, or whatever. Great family community with parents involved and fun all-school events. Highly recommend this school!!
Truman Elementary might be a good school for a "normal" student. However when you are dealing with severe disorders, they prefer to ignore and dismiss the problems rather than handle them professionally. Unfortunately, the children are the ones who pay the price for it.
Bringing my daughter here from another state, she was welcomed as if she had been one of their own from the beginning. When extra help was needed, it wasn't pulling teeth to get her the help...the school reacted immediately in recognizing that help was needed, and following through with giving the extra help. In my opinion, Truman Elementary is a fantastic school.
